DAVID MOYES has stunned Everton chiefs by missing out on £200,000 in wages by NOT signing his new contract.
The Goodison Park board expect Moyes to sign the record-breaking five-year deal within the next few days.
But they are struggling to understand why he has left the £60,000-a-week package untouched for nearly seven weeks.
The contract has been on the table since the end of July and it gives Moyes a 100 per cent pay rise, making him the highest earner in the club’s history. But it will not be backdated and the pay hike only kicks in when he signs.
The Everton boss may have been waiting to see what backing he would get in the transfer window when chairman Bill Kenwright managed to fund the £15million signing of Standard Liege midfielder Marouane Fellaini and sanctioned a £19m bid for Sporting Lisbon’s Joao Moutinho.
“The board are surprised the contract has not been signed yet,” said one Goodison insider. “For one thing, he is missing out on an extra thirty grand a week.
“He is unlikely to get a better offer so it doesn’t make sense not to sign it.”
The Moyes’ contract saga has added to the uncertainty at Everton, who are still mired in political fighting over a stadium move.
The government inquiry into the switch to an arena on the outskirts of Merseyside starts in November and could run for up to six months. The delay is seen as the main reason why no foreign tycoon has moved for the club.
Information from a Everton employee passed on to the NOTW.
It's nice to see that David Moyes isn't motivated by money anyway! or if he is doesn't want to 'waste' £30k a week which could put aside for other means.
I'm sure Newcastle would offer him more than £60,000 a week.
No mention of selling AJ and Mcfadden to fund Fellaini and the Moutinho bid never materialised.
They see the stadium delay is one reason why no one is interested in buying the club, except Ambani and some Arabs have been linked in the past week.
