Dating In The Sixties.

Dating in 1960

It was a hot Saturday evening in the summer of 1960, and Fred had a date

with Peggy Sue.

He arrived at her house and rang the bell.

'Oh, come on in!' Peggy Sue's mother said as she welcomed Fred in.

'Have a seat in the living room. Would you like something to drink?

Lemonade? tea?'

' Tea, please, Fred said. Mom brought the tea.

'So, what are you and Peggy planning to do tonight?' she asked.

'Oh, probably catch a movie, and then maybe grab a bite to eat at the malt

shop, maybe take a walk on the beach...'

'Peggy likes to screw, you know,' Mom informed him.

'Really?' Fred replied; eyebrows rose.

'Oh yes,' the mother continued, When she goes out with her friends, that's all they ever do!'

'Is that so?' asked Fred, incredulous.

'Yes,' said the mother.

'As a matter of fact, she'd screw all night if we let her!'

'Well, thanks for the tip!' Fred said as he began thinking about alternate

plans for the evening.

A moment later, Peggy Sue came down the stairs looking pretty as a

picture, wearing a pink blouse and a hoop skirt, and with her hair tied

back in a bouncy ponytail.

'Have fun, kids!' the mother said as they left.

Half an hour later, a completely dishevelled Peggy Sue burst into the

house and slammed the front door behind her.

Mom!' she angrily yelled to her mother in the kitchen, its the twist 'The bloody dance is called the Twist!'

True this. When I was dating Her indoors, 1958, I was invited to her home to meet her parents for the first time. It was a crisp, cold Sunday and we had been out for a walk in the afternoon. We arrived at her parents home and after introductions her mother took us to the 'front room' where she had laid out tea on a coffee table. There was ham salad, peaches and cream, pot of tea, sugar and milk. There was a coal fire roaring away. My (then) girlfriend asked me to move the coffee table nearer to the fire, so I put my hands under the top and lifted. What I didn't know was that the top wasn't fixed to the base and I deposited the total contents on to the carpet. Still feel embarrassed thinking about it. :D

here's an interesting idea. what term did you generation give dating?

my dad's generation (born 1949) - "going steady with so and so"

my generation (born 1984)) - "going out with so and so"

I was "going out with" from early/mid seventies. US maybe different but "going steady" was never used; I don't know if it ever was over here. I think my parents and their generation were described as "courting".

Where i grew up you were lucky if you got a hello without a knife

In your case I would have said a sack, an axe and a club were minimum requirements

One of the later ones I have heard was "sniffing" or "going out on the sniff" (I think it is meant to relate to a dog-like hunt for a female)
