I was being politically correct, and because a large portion of the US population don't conform to those statements.

I only know two Americans, one is a Vietnam vet, the other a professor who tutored at Cambridge, both thoroughly decent chaps. Why the need to apologise for their kinsfolk is beyond me but they continually do so.

I suppose it's something you mention out of political correctness and indeed, I do not support such mentality. However I haven't seen or heard anything about christians who stone, murder, prosecute or maim people because of different religious or moral beliefs. The most extreme things I heard about are some 'christian' sects marching on the streets with protest signs against warfare, homosexuality and fornication.

 

I wish everyone would be free to believe in what they choose to believe and let everyone have the right to hear about other beliefs as well. That would make the world a much more peaceful place No intimidation, no fighting.

 

Oh man you have no idea. As I said earlier, Rick Santorum was almost the Republican nomination for the presidency and he insisted that he wanted to make the USA the Christian version of Iran. Gays regularly get assaulted for being gay. Abortion doctors get murdered. Parents will literally disown their kids for coming out as gay or non-religious. The only reason gays/muslims/atheists/darker skinned people aren't subject to the things you mention in southern states is because of liberals saving their asses. If a decent percentage of the Republican party had their way only Christians would have basic rights and gays and atheists would be slaughtered.

At the school I worked at in China one the politics teachers was a real prick to my girlfriend and i and ignored us most of the time so I asked one of my students what he was like. So you have conservatives who bitch about Obama and "BIG GOVERNMENT." They don't want government intervening in the lives of anyone. Then, they completely contradict themselves and insist the government get involved in a number of things; drug fighting and incarceration included. They believe in the "crime control" method of prevention, which is basically that we should throw anybody doing illegal shit into jail to punish them and scare them into not doing it ever again. Thus, we end up incarcerating a shitload of people to the point of overpopulation of prisons. This overpopulation will sometimes lead to judges being more likely to give probation in certain cases. As a result, we end up with guys who assault their wives ending up with probation while someone caught with drugs ends up in jail for three years. The most dramatic, absurd example of how inconsistent and harsh our justice system is would be the state of California, which has something called the "Three Strikes" rule. Essentially, any person who commits three felonies (regardless of how insignificant) automatically receives a life sentence. In one instance, a guy in California is now spending the rest of his life in prison because he was caught taking a single Twinkie from a store and had two felonies like 10 years prior.

 

So we have all of these people in our prison systems for victimless crimes because the Conservatives insist we continue the War on Drugs and incarcerate people regardless of mental health and other factors. As a result, it costs the government money it does not have to feed, house, provide healthcare, etc. for all of these prisoners. Thus, the government is forced to raise taxes to fund it. And then the Conservatives complain about their taxes increasing and again blame it on "BIG GOVERNMENT!!!"

It's simple. America promotes itself as the freedom centre of the world. America is, just like any place, crammed with stupid people. Stupid people can't handle the freedom and think they should have their own laws, mislead by the philosophy that the law only serves rich or white people. Countries which are much more lead by systems and procedures such as in Europe, who have a strong social safety net, will have a far lower criminality rate and then there's countries where lawlessness rules, so they don't put their numerous criminals in jail, whereas the US has a pretty strong law enforcement.

 

But that's just my little theory.

I married an American girl, and married into a wonderful family. For some reason im not quite sure of, theyre proud to be rednecks. I wouldnt count them as that, but hey ho. But its something that I used to hate about Americans and thats their national pride. I never understood it. I have no patriotism whatsoever, so it doesnt make sense. Then I realised that i didnt hate them because they were patriotic, I was jealous. I wish I had that belief in something, as strongly as they do (regardless of whether its sometimes misplaced).

 

There are dicks over there, their politics are quite often laughable but look at the UK - Tories in charge, a lot of idiots on the streets.... Same here in Switzerland - crazy politics in some cases and absolute tools sometimes, usually on the road.

 

There are stupid people everywhere, with stupid politics everywhere... Americans are just in the spotlight and so people focus on them.
