Same old Everton

Going to be completely honest here as well. I'm not the biggest fan of McCarthy. He either goes about his game quietly or I just don't think he offers much. I know loads of fans rave about him but for me I'm not convinced yet! I don't know what it is. I just don't see his impact on the team.

I'm not sure what Everton games you've been watching but he's been immense. My advice is to watch his overall performance especially off the ball and you'll see how hard he works and the cover he provides for almost every other outfield player. He's going to be a true Everton great if he stays for years.

Why are you basing your opinion on previous seasons? It's irrelevant. This is the season, this is the points tally and we are 6th. 8 points of 4th. It doesn't matter about previous seasons.

You really pick and choose, don't you? It's been mentioned a couple of times already that WE HAVE A GAME IN HAND. The only reason we are 8 points out of fourth, and not 5 points out, is because our game was postponed.

I'd suggest that's why others suggested you have an agenda - because you're painting everything so negatively.

peteH you whopper.... if u read my thread properly u will see i am pointing out that we are not good enough for top four just yet......nowhere do i suggest martinez out.

I know that Brett you big mac. I was ironically making a funny based on 50 other threads and posts on here calling for the sacking of managers and chairmen (by many, many others). Did not mean to single you out and I apologize for that.

I'm not painting anything negatively. It's facts we're 8 points a drift. Yes we have a game in hand but to presume its a guaranteed 3 points is very naive. Nothing is certain.

Even if we take 3 points from the palace game there will still be a 5 point deficit to reduce. It's looking negative to be fair. Frustrating more than anything.

In my opinion finishing outside the top 4 will be a massive disappointment considering our points tally at the turn of the year. On current form we will continue to fall away.

It's ok trying to remain positive but the same thing happens every season. It's the nearly boys, just not quiet good enough. Everton remain the best of the rest.

Until last year we were famous for starting slowly and finishing well (04/05 aside) so the same thing doesn't happen every year.....if it happens this year it'll be the second time.

Not talking about fast/slow starts I'm talking about final league standings. We're always just not good enough to sustain a proper challenge. We've done it once (top4) with a pretty average side through a bit of luck and a hardworking side. Other than that we just fall short.

New to this site so I don't know anyone or how people are, i've just come on here during work time hoping to have discussions with some proper Everton fans. Winds me up how much doom and gloom goes along with being an Everton fan, you get it at the match all the time people moaning because a player misplaces a pass or we draw with a team a few places below us and its the end of the world. This season has been a good season whether we finish 1st or 11th, we have a new manager that plays football the right way and knows how to make posiitive substitutions, we have been unlucky with timing of injurys but you can't expect any new manager to come in and perform miracles immediately! Its a working progress and we are definitely moving in the right direction, the McCarthy shout was beyond deluded, the lad has been brilliant. I'm looking forward to the next few years under Bobby and I think all Everton fans should.

If we finish 11th we'll have had a good season. Lmao. Ok.

RE McCarthy. He's a decent enough midfielder, but he lacks any real creativity, goal threat etc. his passes are always simple. So sometimes I just see him as a spare man.

Playing with two sitters doesn't help going forward IMO unless you have at least one who can operate in both areas of the pitch. No doubt if he was a lone sitter I wouldn't expect any attacking threat from him.

You're missing my point, this season has been about progression, the fact the players have taken so well and quickly to a new manager who has radically changed our playing style is a success, as I said the timings of injuries to key players has been unlucky, but I do think with time and a more in depth squad (Which takes time, you can't expect a manager to bring in ALL the players he wants in 2 windows) we will be in a stronger position to sustain a champions league push.

Back to McCarthy, you don't have to score goals, beat people or get assists to be a good player, his work rate is unreal and without him Coleman/Baines/Barkley would not be able to break forward as much as they do, he is constantly providing cover and protection to the back 4.

not to cause offence to anyone but I can often spot the younger fans on here... there are certain traits,

"McCarthy isn't all that" (younger fans enjoy seeing the likes of Mirallas, Barkley, Coleman play the game like they are in the school yard) - it takes a few years of watching and playing to realise what a valuable job. Its no offence, its just the way the appreciation for the game becomes more in depth as you get older.

McCarthy makes the game easier for his team mates. Simple as that.

It's just occurred to me how many injuries we've actually had, it's a lot when you add them up. At some point in the last 2 or 3 months all of the following players have missed games through injury:

Baines, Jags, Distin, Coleman, Pienaar, Lukaku, Gerry, Barkley, Alcaraz, Oviedo, Kone, Gibson.

12, and I may have even missed some out. I know all teams get injuries but a lot of these overlapped and just think how big Spurs' squad is for example compared to ours. I think to still be in with a shout of top 4 whilst also still in the FA cup is pretty damn good to be fair.

This thread gives me a headache. Somebody needs to shake the shit out of Cotto until he comes back to earth. He's starting to make Brett Angel look grounded. Quite an achievement!

Anyhow, we are starting to get the exciting players in our squad back from injury, we have done our best to keep a consistent standard while they've been out, and we are still in contention for the top 4 with a fair amount of time left for us to make a push. We've got another striker in on loan who's scored 1 in 1, and we are just learning how to play with him in the team. There are so many possibilities for directions our play can go with a healthy squad, and I, for one, am excited to see what the rest of the season has in store for us. Nothing is etched in stone yet.

You Boomed in my presence, without permission!!

However, noting that your 'Boom' hit particularly high levels of popularity, I can't do much else other than to congratulate.

I like to think of you as my mentor in such matters J; wouldn't be where I am today in booming circles without your support and inspiration.....sniff.

Claude Makalele (in his prime) started most of the attacks for Chelsea by the way, Winning the ball, taking it off the center halves, turning and passing forward, if peeps really see what he did then he was far less of a water carrier than some people make out. Best player I have ever seen at shielding the ball and pushing players out the way with his hips. Glad '' the special one'' agrees with me, as the first sentence are actually his own words................

See the problem I have with the bold is this....

How can we expect to have consistent champions league finishes if we don't have a pot to piss in?

It's all well and good saying he needs time to build his own squad but unfortunately I don't see him having enough money to build a squad capable of consistent top 4 finishes. I just see that as fact.

The ability to finish in those top 4 positions "this" season will give us a much better platform to build on.

It's been the same for a long time. We just haven't been quite good enough to break in (apart from a one of in 04/05, Without the financial muscle. I can't see us becoming a "consistant" top 4 team and it's hard to see us breaking the top 4 to be honest. This season is probably the best opportunity we have. However it's looking grimmer than ever in league standings. We've got a lot of catching up to do.

I'm looking at reality rather than the "bigger picture"
