bluenosetoffee
I can't see there being any truth in the rumor. I would be absolutely gutted if we got rid of him. Such a workhorse in midfield and gets the team going. You can tell when he isn't in the team thats for sure. Kant

Hafnia
haha! We are keen to open talks but United may scupper that??? Did he sign a 2 year contract or something when he signed last year? My guess is that it was at least 4 years soooo, in other words United - Jog On!

Guest Nikica
Man United seem to think they can just jump in and take other clubs' players, just 'cos they are Man United.
Aidan
"Everton midfielder James McCarthy is poised to sign a new deal which will double his wages and extend his stay at Goodison Park. The 23-year-old Republic of Ireland international has been linked with a move to Manchester United in recent days, following a superb debut season for the Blues.McCarthy signed last summer from Wigan Athletic for £13.75m but the Toffees' board now want to protect their asset. The Glasgow-born starlet was sounded-out at the end of the season and his agents are now thrashing out the finer details. It's understood Everton boss Roberto Martinez has already given his approval and the club expect it to be rubber-stamped by the time McCarthy reports back for pre-season training.McCarthy would see his existing deal also extended to 2019." You don't pay such a high fee and then put him on average wages so he must be on £40/50k a week already.....no way we could (or should) double that; it'd blow our pay structure and everyone would want a significant rise. Romey 1878
Jags must be due a new contract soon, he signs a new one every few months .
NYBlue
An extension and pay rise would seem justified, double pay though seems strange. Roberto also mentioned the same will be happening with Barkley. There was a post a little while back about how this falls in line with how RM operates, a number of extensions makes the player feel loved and rewarded but also keeps them on longer contracts in case someone decides they want to bid. Romey 1878
Doubling his wages would be insane. What the hell would we do when we say down to discuss a new contract with him?! We couldn't.
markiediow
If all our players really want to win things, they should keep their current wage and allow the money to be spent on new players. They are on very good money anyway. I presume there is still a long contract anyway.

Clean sheets. Goals scored. That way financially it's all covered based on success. Edited May 28, 2014 by MiguelCotto
Guest Nikica
A defensive midfielder on 80k a week at Everton.... No thanks He's integral to how the team plays and functions though. I see your point that 80k is a lot of money for a player to be on given your wage structure, however.

More important players in the team for a start who would also want a rise. He's a 50k max. If he wants stupid money he should go elsewhere. Aidan
He isn't a year into his current contract yet. Lets just give him one in another season when we've got other priorities sorted out. We wont be giving him double his wage and anyone who believes that's what we're going to do needs to think about it realistically.
MC11
I doubt the lads even that greedy and it really is BS. But seriously a DM as the highest earning player? 80k can't see that.
BlueBlood81
Does anyone factually know what he's on? He came from Wigan, doubt they were payin kings ransoms. Story sinks of bullshit anyway.
Guest Nikica
Yeah, it's probably a media rumour, more press shite. He doesn't seem like a very demanding type of player. However, it's always good to discuss these things, even if it is hypothetical. Edited May 28, 2014 by Nikica
MC11
I'll wager he's on near 50k here already. He was probably on 25k - 30k at Wigan. He's already doubled. No need for a wage increase unless it's on bonuses for success.
Guest Nikica
Put it this way - he's better than some other DMs in the league who are more handsomely rewarded. However, those clubs have more money than Everton, so if there is any truth to the rumours (which I strongly doubt) he will have to accept that or hand in a transfer request. MC11
Everton should only have real goal scorers on that type of money.
Shukes
a goal scorer is more important than a defensive mid? No the wage structure should be structured around players with the best ability and not the position they play. McCarthy is greedy because of a journo rumour? guys we don't even know what he is on or what he has been offered. we don't know if he has asked for it or if the club are just rewarding players. let this one unfold before we snap judgements.
