I couldn't name a top wrestler or in any order, there's been so many impressive names, but for that elite bracket, would have to include, in no order

# Shawn Michaels

# Triple H

# Chris Benoit

# Dean Malenko

# Hulk Hogan (before all that Hollywood, or New World Order crap)

# Bret Hart

# Bruno Sammartino

doesn't anyone remember wrestling before the 21st century ? The Legion of Doom aside, and possibly The Undertaker, no real retro names there. I never rated Perfect or Warrior too much. The former won the Intercontinental title on one or two occasions (RIP Curt Hennig), but was nowhere near the technical ability of other names of that time or beyond, and Warrior may have beaten Hogan at Wrestlemania VI, but I don't remember much else. Tried to make an ill-advised return with the now defunct WCW some years later, and a re-match with Hogan, but it was never going to take off. Too much of a hyperbole figure, and there's been enough of those in past years and experiences.

I am a 90s kid, started watching around 99 or so. Have watched stars before that time but ultimately I think my first impressions have had a big impact in forming the list of favourites I have today. Did definitely get a kick out of some of those older wrestlers i.e. Ultimate Warrior, Bret Hart etc. and matches before my time but what I grew up with just always sticks to me.

A mate of mine does some wrestling out in Runcorn, and he spews about the newer stuff. Reckons the current crop of wrestlers are awful, with no real personalities or rivalries.

Seems to rate this TNA stuff quite highly.

TNA is awful. It's like an elephants graveyard for former recognized and accomplished names such as Kurt Angle, Hogan, Sting etc, seeing out the twilight of their careers.

Used to have an interest for a short time, but eventually lost interest in a full capacity. Wasnt' much better than the now defunct WCW.

She's no Vince McMahon or Jack Tunney but these individuals will try their best or do what they think is right for their company. I couldn't even name who the TNA champion is now. Last I watched, Ken Anderson and Jeff Hardy were swapping it pretty frequent. Even Angle held for it a time, and it was sad to see such a celebrated name wasting his time on such a disappointing show. Hogan should have divorced himself from the industry long ago, but apparently he's been in some financial struggles in recent years so seems a bit desperate. Still gets in the ring of all things once or twice, but it's merely for nostalgia purposes. The flame was extinguished long ago. It's on Challenge often enough now, but never watch anymore, and don't like the channel add to that.

Really and truly don't want to offend anyone but this thread totally bemuses me .

It makes as much sense as having an "Andrew Lloyd Webber" thread with people discussing JC Superstar, Cats and Phantom of the Opera as if they were real life.

I'm sure it's clever theatre but grown ups talking about it like it's a sport (though I realise it's in "off topic" rather than "general sport") is just plain bonkers imo.

Sorry.

Are you back from your vacation yet or just dropping by

Wrestling is actually 'sports entertainment' so to all intents and purposes it should be in the general sports index, but there's no sense in changing it over at this point. It's more than just 'miscellaneous talk'

Been a wrestling enthusiast for many years now, recognize a whole host of names and events and have a damn good knowledge but haven't watched for some eight or nine years now on a regular basis

Yes it's generally aimed at kids, but they're so naive, a great many don't realize it's all make believe. Even went along with it myself going back far enough. It's a real shitter when you realize it's all storylined and staged. Adults watch, men and women of all ages.

Yes it's not an industry for everyone, say again have lost interest in recent years, but it really did captivate for a good many years.

Try and see a match between Kellet and Bobby Barnes. I never laugh much or offer much humor but admittedly it's an amusing match, if you can ever see it on World of Sport. Tried to find it on Youtube before but was unable. The 1970s wrestling from Britsh event halls with the Town Mayor in attendance and people in the front row, in savile row suits smoking pipes and cigars are a long forgotten piece of the past, with names like Nagasaki, Giant Haystacks, Michael McManus and Wayne Bridges. They may have offered some (unintentional) humor and been something for a rainy day but can't come close to the WWF of the time or even years later or the real spectacular of the industry.

Hulk Hogan is 60 Years Old Today

Was never a favorite wrestler of mine, but recognize him for what he was, an immense and highly popular athlete who reached legendary status and provided one or two moments or matches that will live with us forever. The scoop slam of Andre the Giant being one such example. Now wasted on the elephants graveyard that is TNA but still respected and admired nonetheless. Happy Birthday Mr Bollea

He should have quit the industry years ago. Just another name to add into it, such as Bruce Willis, Harrison Ford etc, still doing their respective things like Die Hard and Indiana Jones, hanging on to past glories or nostalgia purposes, when the sensible thing to do, would have been to have stepped down long before.

Say what you like, and he's evidently too old to still be involved, but what an immense name for the industry of wrestling. Just doesn't have the sense to know when enough is enough, but it still pays a check doesn't it.

I'm not knocking him and his accomplishments he was the second biggest drawing power in the history of the business. His ability as a worker is obviously well known and was carried by Dibase,Savage etc in longer matches and when he wasn't facing those calibre of guys the matches went 10-15 minutes but they were sold out. His TNA run is for his pension as he took a hit on his divorce and legal case with his turd of a son. Will still end up with WWE unfortunately

I can't get WWE wrestling and even if we could, don't think I could watch again after an absence of eight or nine years. I couldn't even name 95 per cent of who is involved on their programs now.

Although saw some of a TNA PPV last night, think it was Hardcore Justice, but realized I shouldn't have been watching as said would never view again, but couldn't quite pull away. Lots of blood and people cutting themselves, but it's all just nonsense isn't it.

SummerSlam always signaled the arrival of the fall when watching years back, so it could be my favorite event of the year, in the knowledge that the winter months are not far away.

Glad to see TT has a few other wrestling fans in here. Huge fan. Although I only seem to care about Punk and Bryan at present moment. In my eyes any angle with Punk involved is gold. Quite enjoying the "new corporation" angle, but the same ending (excluding last night) for seven straight shows was tiresome. Wish they would push Barrett though. Who's your choice of wrestlers in the current roaster?

What I dont like about this new angle is "the big cry-a-baby". Why the must reduce the big show to a crying giant baby is beyond me, just makes no sense in terms of his character and bores me to death. The Shield are ace though, Ambrose is going to be a hell of a star in the E in a couple of years. They do need to sort Ziggler out, hes a top performer yet seems to be depushed all the time.

Celebrated womens wrestling great Mae Young passed away recently after a short illness. Not a name some will recognize but reached legendary status over time and was still involved into this century, albeit in a comic capacity. Regards to her immediate family and loves ones.

RIP

It's arguably the second biggest event in the industry after Wrestlemania but only ever been in attendance at one (RR) event (New Orleans 2001) although can't even recall who "won" that night, although must have been Steve Austin as he faced Johnson for the then WWF title at Wrestlemania later that year. (Winner of Royal Rumble gets a title shot at the main event)

Can't watch as Sky Sports not available, and even if able, still wouldn't tune in. Fell out of favor with the WWE around 2004, 2005, and wouldn't even know most of todays roster. (Even then) It's damn stupid, as when a wrestler goes out of the ring, they sometimes sneak back in, or pull another opponent out, and the referee turns a blind eye (or simply doesn't spot it). Lot of action underway.

The best way is not to use emotion faces (or whatever they resemble) altogether.

Had a look up at last nights winner as Batista, which someone I believe prophesized ahead of time.

Therefore he will face the then WWE champion at Wrestlemania later this year for a title shot (or is it for the World Heavyweight title)

Damn WWE caused a mess when they split into two brands with different champions.

So the road to Wrestlemania is starting to take place, not really happy with the way things have gone down.

Batista winning the Royal Rumble was a complete and utter joke, definitely did not deserve to walk back in and win straight away like that. Maybe would have copped less heat from the crowd if they had him come back as a surprise entrant and go on and win but that wasn't to be.

Daniel Bryan - clearly the most over and loved with the crowd, how he's going to be stuck in a match with HHH and not main eventing is ridiculous.. IMO the main event should be a fatal four way between Bryan, Batista, Orton and Punk.

Guess Lesnar v Undertaker was always going to happen, can't see it being a great match in all honesty. Can see Wrestlemania as the end of The Shield unfortunately, hopefully as well Cena jobs to Bray Wyatt who has been nothing but impressive since his debut.

I didn't realize Lesnar was back involved once more. Saying that, don't watch or got little interest in the WWE now. But whoever faces 'Taker at Wrestlemania is facing a lost cause, as Calloway wins every year, has been since '91, and there's no way they're ever going to change it so long as he's involved. We know its all storylined with pre-determined outcomes, but (to) some of the more say 'less intelligent' or who go along with everything - you got to believe eventually, that's something's up.

Last 'Mania I watched was 21 from Los Angeles, and while a decent event that couldn't live up to the grandeur of the year before, haven't been keeping up with subsequent events.

While on the subject in question, purchased some DVD releases from past PPVs including one or two Unforgiven events, Breaking Point, and last but not least, Backlash 2004 (Benoit World Heavyweight Champion in triple threat stipulation with HBK and Triple H in Benoit's home town Edmonton (Canada, not North London)

Should be a worthwhile viewing experience when the time arises.

Punk's still contracted with WWE - I'm still holding on to some hope he'll be back in time for Wrestlemania.

The only way The Shield could end in somewhat of a satisfying scenario would be to have them in a triple threat match, feel that would be awesome. Would have been awesome if Reigns had won the Rumble and then won the title, having the belt amongst the group would have solidified their status as one of the best stables ever.

Agreed DK, no doubt the Undertaker will win, hopefully him and Lesnar can put on a great match.

Last time I saw Lesnar in a WWE match, it was against Goldberg around 2004. Maybe Wrestlemania, or a title on the line, but all I know is, it was one of the poorest matches you could hope to see. I think at the time, it was both mens last match in the company, and the end result was a very disappointed audience.

You may as well skip the Calloway / Lesnar match up if you're able to watch. For one thing, the Undertaker takes longer to get to the ring than actual time spent inside, Lesnar would appear to be a poor imitation of his former self, and as before, you know there's only going to be one winner.

Does Garcia still announce matches ? That is one irritating slag.

Lesnar is the best all rounder in the Wwe. His match with taker will a least give the crowd a chance to suspend their disbelief that taker won't win. Batista has turned which maybe will allow punk or Bryan to main event. I think they may tease the shield splitting up until mania due to their awesome match with the wyatts

I recently watched the Unforgiven PPV from 2004 they held in Portland, Oregon and despite the main event match with Orton and HHH, it was a largely disappointing card. It's stupid when names like Shawn Michaels pick up a win over wrestlers that should beat him out of sight. There wasn't even a match for the WWE title ?

Given an '18' certificate for some reason. I never saw any evidence that warranted such a classification.

Trying to get hold of Summerslam 2002 when Rock faced Lesnar, but have been unsuccessful in finding a copy in any reliable retailers.

Viewed the Backlash pay-per-view from 2004 last night

Benoit retains the world title in a triple threat (what the did crowd expect as a home favorite) and best match of the night was a then rising Orton and Cactus Jack in a hardcore mess.

Main event was disappointing. But a good many added features, but still not worth the price of purchase.

Had the good fortune to be present at two past wrestlemania events, and it's an experience that you'll take with you forever, but as always, just lost interest in the industry in recent years and wouldn't even be able to name 95 per cent of who's on the Raw and Smackdown brands now, not to mention, who is champion of which title. As with just about everything else today, all about the goddamn commercial aspect of things, and (any) viewing pleasure would seem to take a second seat. 'Pleased' if Cena is indeed not part of the main event this time - one overrated figure and never understood the appeal.

Another Wrestlemania done.

Expected and was glad that Daniel Bryan walked out champion, well done to the lad!

Still in shock though about the Undertaker's streak finally coming to an end, going down to Brock Lesnar. 21-1 seems as though it will be the final straw in his career, the match itself looked beyond him at times.

Other than that decent results, overall pleased with the event as a whole.

Fucking hell, Callaway lost a match at Wrestlemania ?

Only taken 23 years for this to occur. Wasn't even aware Wrestlemania was last night, although haven't watched this event since around 2005 in my defense.

Undertaker can't have many more years left in him as an able athlete so surprised they didn't allow him to see it out as remaining unbeaten. I don't know who Bryan is, although seen the name before. At least it makes a change from Triple H or Cena or any of the usual names winning the gold each time, but other than that, just about lost all in interest in what occurs in the industry now, but that Lesnar match loss did raise a genuine surprise.
