Rooney

Recommended Posts

Would anyone take him for the number ten position? Or even midfield as seems to be spoken about a lot lately?

I'd stick with him up top. He's still fast over 10 yards and got a trick or two to get away from the last man. Restrict him from dropping deep and he would get a bag full.

Exactly this he'd be class as a 10 for us. Drop Barkley back - that's the one! He'd really drive and lead the team

Totally agree. What is it with everyone trying to reinvent the wheel. Rooney played his entire career as a forward, his instincts are to attack.

Mourinho says that these multi-role players are useless and he prefers a specialist in each position.

Gareth Bale was a left back at Southampton and (to start with) at Spurs; sometimes reinventing the wheel is a good thing.

its official, he's for sale. i think the links to everton will start appearing soon. honestly, if he could lose some weight and could be motivated again, i'd be all for it, sadly i just don't see that happening.

The Goodison retirement home for players well past their prime is back in business....

I actually think it could be an ok move if he came for nothing and £80k a week. Is he going to wave goodbye to over 200k a week for the next 20 months?

It's rumoured he's for sale.

If they want Seamus I'd do a deal as long as it was a straight swap and Rooney (like Haf suggests) takes a big drop in salary; not like he needs the money. We need a new right back anyway and if we can't get the right man we could always re-sign Hibbo use Holgate,

Being serious Mark mate. No Seamus hater me but I'm aware we need, to move forward, minimally cover or preferably a better option at RB.

I'm very sceptical about his current level of ability, but part of me thinks it'd be a bit of match made in heaven if he was to come back in one of the next two transfer windows. He'd potentially solve some of the biggest issues in our squad, providing some creativity from a central position and giving Barkley a great mentor to learn from. He'd also be a good back-up for Rom up front.

The only way it'd be beneficial to us is if coming back here gave him a new lease of life, because the Rooney we see now wouldn't be someone who would be good for us. Especially at the wage we'd still have to pay him even with a drop in his current earnings.

That being said, if it did give him that new lease of life he'd be worth every penny, and then some.

I said a while ago that IF we get the fully focused Rooney then we will see the best of Lukaku and potentially Barkley....

Rooney knows what a striker should be doing "off the ball" - he is one of the best at it, Rom will have a person on the pitch who will not stand for his half hearted runs or sulks - nor will he tolerate lack of pressing. He also knows the type of service Rom needs and will be a good mediator between the team and Rom - good for both parties.

He also knows what its like to be in Barkley's shoes - he can mentor him. Rooney was the player that Barkley is trying to be - the creator.... he also turned into the muted passer.

IF we get the 80% of his peak player that he possibly could be then it can be a great catalyst,

Yes from me..he's been stale at utd for ages and in need of a change..almost looks like he's lost his love of the game...his boyhood club might reignite that..and if it did then we'd have a proper captain and winner on the pitch amongst other things

yep - and to rom aswell

Yeah, true. Bringing him in to get the best out of these 2 (as well as the obvious boost to the squad) would make his transfer worth every penny.

I will not be giving the whole prodigal son/welcome home nonsense. This is pure results business based like it was for him to leave for United.

He has had a good career medal wise from his move - fair enough, Bill was able to stave the banks off so it suited both parties - but I will save all the teary eyed nonsense. If he works out then great, if he doesn't then ship him out to the MLS. No captaincy required he shouldn't need the armband.... but will no doubt want it - tick off a child hood ambition.

Wasn't suggesting giving him the armband by the way..doesn't need it to be vocal

To be honest I was just thinking that it is something he would want. He lost the right for the arm band a long time ago.

The best he can hope for is to wear the blue shirt again and do so at a cost that isn't ridiculous to us.

Not anymore, last year he's deteriorated at an astonishing rate.

ciggies, food and beer. Not necessarily excessive - but where Ronaldo sought out the best lifestyle - Rooney just never avoided the wrong one enough.

Amazing he's had the career he has really. Probably played carrying far more weight than the average player yet covered the ground remarkably well with amazing stamina..... something had to give.

Compare his legs and torso to other players - I believe he has been allowed to get away with a higher body fat percentage because he was able to deliver.

Id have him back in an instant, money dependent.

He has been pushed from position to position for years and the stick he gets is ridiculous, for all that I have joined in on occasions. Stick him up top, and get the ball into him inside the box and he will score 20 a season easily. Dont move him wide, dont move him deep, dont expect him to play as a false nine, just let him play on the shoulder of the last man, helping build up the play when required, before making a b-line to the box.

Id also like to see him get fired up again and get aggressive.

Absolutely not! Please no!! We should be looking for the future, not making rash decisions based solely on nostalgia. Rooney's decline is clear for all to see, and he's not going to get better.

Would you take an 80% pay cut when your ridiculous salary is guaranteed for several years?

I think he could still do a job, him and Rom up top could be very good for us. We would also get massive exposure world wide. For this whole thing to go big we need a big name player, City got Robinho, Rooney could be the one to get us the headlines to bring in other players. I think a move back would reignite him too, I could see him shedding a few pounds and getting back to peak fitness to show he still has it in a blue shirt.
