Mason Holgate

Recommended Posts

worth the gamble, seeing how it turned out for Stones may influence things, but from him not keen on Man U for lack of football, he won't get that from us either, I would say U21's till xmas then be loaned out to develop unless he's a real superstar.

Good to see if true but we need a big name to go straight into the first team urgently.

I get the argument about the value of experience but have no problem at all bringing in youngsters. Galloway is almost there. He'll make mistakes, and we'll groan from time to time, but I'd rather invest in him than waste money on an aging player. Browing isn't far off either, and of course we have Garbutt. Defence is not so bad, quite honestly.

Put all the money in creativity, providing the missing link in our ability to score more goals.

I just asked my mate who is a season ticket holder at Barnsley about him and this is what he replied

Steve.....don't think he's calibre of Stones but is slightly younger. Who knows kids got masses of potential but you just don't know. Stones was defo gunna be a superstar but Mason am not sure....I think 1 million is good price for both clubs and a good punt for Everton churning out another Barnsley superstar

This lad was spot on when I asked him about Stones when we signed him

I agree with the investment, but right now, with the money flowing in from the top 4-6 teams, this article is scary: http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11661/9930930/you-cant-win-anything-with-kids-premier-league-winners-rarely-feature-many-young-players

I have no problem with the tendency to develop young players into stars, but it's increasingly clear that we're becoming a farm team for any club with billionaire owners. I've only been an Everton supporter for 5 years, having no football pedigree before that in the states, but I'm becoming more and more scared that the club I've learned to bleed for will soon turn into a Barnsley type itself.

I don't think this is one of the signings Martinez was talking about. This is a player for the future and Martinez has said this himself in the press conference.

He said before that he is looking at getting 3 more players in before the transfer window shuts. This to me means another first choice backup CB (maybe Evans, even though Martinez said there was no truth in this rumour) a no.10 and a striker.

Confirmed: http://www.barnsleyfc.co.uk/news/article/mason-holgate-signs-for-everton-2615928.aspx

Barnsley Football Club can confirm that Mason Holgate has today joined Everton on a permanent basis for an undisclosed fee.

The fee has been announced as undisclosed, but the Club can confirm that it exceeds the figure routinely reported in the press.
The Club has also negotiated to retain a significant on-going financial interest in Mason’s career moving forward.
The Club wishes Mason every success in his future career.

So it means we have paid more than the reported 2 million and also they get some sort of sell on fee. Probably 25% of any future fee. Welcome Mason! :)

for 2 or 3 clubs to be after him he must have something so yes welcome mason !

Lol nope. It was reported 1m, Barnsley said more, likely 1.5 or 2m max (stones was 3m). So with that even at 2m were at 6.5m for the window, I think that was spent on one player for bristol

It's shocking

But how do you know without ever having seen him play? Give the lad a chance!

You say that as though I've said he'll be crap? I think my post was pretty fair. Stones is THAT good it would be very unlikely we'd get someone of that calibre ever again.

Absolutely nothing against this lad! I hope he does well!

Everton fans I noticed weren't happy at all. You lot of twitter especially wanted the might Leroy Fer

I think folks were more upset that he was our ONLY signing that window rather than upset that we signed him.

I was bummed when we didn't get Fer though.

As mentioned that was more about the huge anti climax of that window. If I remember correctly we were pushing the top four behind chelsea and arsenal with Tottenham behind us, we were begging for a big signing after a quiet summer window and Moyes came out and signed an unknown centre back for the future.

I remember being unhappy with the signing but it was aimed at Moyes and the board, not Stones.

he's right there was plenty complaining when we signed stones and now he's worth 30M.

Really? Looking back, looks like most of the complaints were because we weren't investing in the first team rather than him as a player.

Enjoyed some of the puns

Gave the pen away so disastrous start but composed himself and stood out as a cut above the other players. Looked good positionslly and was throwing himself in front of anything he could.

Not seen anywhere near enough to pass judgement yet. Doubt he's ready for the prem just yet like but time will tell.

Those who watched him tonight, what did you think.

Everton vs Liverpool u21 game...

Looks like he's got a bit of pace about him. Bit of filling out to do but yeah looked good I thought.

I watched a bit, looked good on the ball, tried to play out of defence.

Honestly hes stronger than people give him credit for.

He's played 20 plus games in league one. Against league one players. Strong guys that have tried to give him some.

Got sent off at Keepmoat, Doncaster (Hes from Doncaster btw) Played against direct teams like Bradford away and many say he was MOTM for Barnsley. Bradford are very direct.

Looked good. I only caught the game from early second half when we were 1-3 down but what I saw impressed me. He can play it out of defence, he is comfortable on the ball and his long range passing showed great vision and was almost inch perfect.

It's still mainly potential but he was definitely a cut above most other players on the pitch from what I saw.

I think he definitely stood out. Hopefully he's got a bright future here.

Also really liked the look of Jones at rb.
