Mason Holgate

Recommended Posts

Can't think of a bad game he's had in that RB position.

Clearly stands out as a superb defender. Be interesting to see if he stays there or eventually moves into the centre.

Looks very reliable and plays like he's years older than he is. Can see him being a big player in the future for us.

just realized today i don't think we will get a RB to cover for coleman this summer, Holgate has been excellent there.

Ye now I think of it he must be close to MoM. Excellent today.

Really?? Got a bit of the ball, but was almost always stationary and playing the ball sideways or back. Passes were poor as well, underhit or just off target. Saw a lot of turnovers coming from him.

Not writing him off, just wasn't impressed today. Although I can say that about whole team today...

He's doing ok as a stand in, but surely everyone can see we miss Seamus massively?

We need a right back, we have done for years. Mason is a centre half doing his best out of position. In the same way Galloway did ok when Baines was out. They look alright because they are still good footballers, but full backs are a specialist position and we need specialists.

He's a hindrance to our attacking play because of this. If we're going to play without width in midfield then we need our full-backs to be excellent going forward. Holgate is nowhere near good enough at that aspect - as has been pointed out he'll get the ball and turn backwards or pass back infield. And the few occasions he does try and run forward with the ball he is dispossessed most times. He did put one cracking ball into the box yesterday but I wouldn't even have him as back-up RB, he'd be back-up to the back-up for me.

This for me

I want to see the lad moved into his natural position, as said he's no RB but he has all the tools to become a very good potentially top center half

I completely agree but knowing Everton we will say he is fine till Seamus recovers and strengthen elsewhere. Vault me on it.

Certainly feel that he has looked his best on the right side of a back three. He is energetic. Gets up and back but sadly does not have the same effect as Coleman in the final third.

Noticed everyone saying he should be playing CB but in no way does he displace Williams for me. Williams has that right sided CB spot on lock when we are using four at the back. Bet Koeman feels the same way and it's why we see Holgate at RB.

I am stoked we have someone so young and versatile in the squad. Getting experience and certainly has room to grow/learn.

It's his natural position it's not to suggest he jumps ahead of anyone but when we are being linked with £20/30m moves for other young CB's when we need cover at RB and possibly LB when we have Holgate who's more than capable imo of filling that void centrally

Jags is knocking on and Mori doesn't fill me with confidence to be honest I'm still not sold on him

Plus most young defender's are played out wide before then get moved centrally its common practice, he's done well but he's no wingback

Hope he does, he needs game time. I actually feel comfortable when he is on the pitch.

This

IF Jags can't manage constant games and Williams keeps his under par performances up I want to see him given a chance to bed himself in at CB

Yeah, wouldn't fancy him at CH, but should be in at RB now, surely  Koeman can't play coco the clown again.

It's his natural position he's a better option than Cuco the clown at RB but the lad isn't a RB and certainly not a RWB

I'd much rather have him there than Williams with how poor him and Martina have been I'd rather chuck him centrally and start Kenny at RB let the lads gain experience they can't do much worse than the shower of shit we've witnessed thus far although I know it won't happen like

Must have only been koeman who rated him because as shit as our CB have been Unsy refuses to play him and give him a shot.  Can’t be worse than keane or Williams at the moment.

He's injured. He'd be first choice for me.

Koeman preferred Keane and Cuco at the start of the season over him.

He doesn’t let us down when called upon and should be given more time. Holgate is a player I can see being a regular name on our sheet in the future. Can’t wait for him to be back in the team.

He makes mistakes, but they all do at the moment. He can give us a bit more energy and speed than the other three.

Hopefully he is fit for Weds, because with Carroll about we are going to need a bit more size in the back 4 especially if Kenny needs to go to left back.

Think he might play all centre's in a back 3, if Holgate is fit he could be played at right wing back, with Kenny on the other side. It's the mids and attackers where we are failing.

As an FYI, I believe he's the only one of our main young contributors who will have to be counted against the 25 man squad roster next year due to going over the age limit. DCL, Lookman, Kenny, Davies, Vlasic will all have at least one more year of not being counted against the roster limit.

He's done well for me and seems a no brainer to stay with the squad based on performance alone. But I especially expect him to stay since Jags could very well be near retirement, Williams is hardly guaranteed a stay here given his aging, and Funes Mori should look to move on if he doesn't break into the regular back four upon return from his injury.

It will be very different the following year though when we have to decide whether DCL, Lookman, Vlasic, Kenny warrant staying with the squad.

As soon as this happened and I saw the replays I feared I knew the outcome. While this article is in no way conclusive, in terms of the FA investigation being done; they really didn't need a lip reading expert to confirm what many could see plainly.

The push was immature. Just dumb. The same type of naive move we've been criticizing Mirallas for making during his whole Everton career. I remember seeing someone in the matchday thread say they "liked the push" or the passion it signified. Really? It was way too close to the touchline and it's a miracle he wasn't booked right away, but at the same time, Madley never had that match under control. This is going to look so messy once they finalize this investigation. I honestly don't know the rules here but perhaps since it was initiated by the officials there won't be anything retroactive against Holgate? I can see him getting a lengthy ban for a false accusation if that's even on the table.

RF was speaking Portuguese, that'd be the first hurdle in even understanding him and the statement he most likely made wouldn't really sound like what MH is saying he heard.

The reason I even bring this up is because 'crying wolf' in this situation helps no one. Justice and retribution in situations like this is already so rare. I bet Holgate realized he shouldn't have pushed Firmino and got caught up in the furor of the moment. At that point perhaps he misheard or embellished. I'm too familiar with this word to not know what it looks like being mouthed by someone. Perhaps MH just didn't want to deal with abuse via twitter and decided to step away, but personally, if I believed in my truth - I wouldn't back down for anything, especially from social media.

I think he fucked up pretty bad and he knows it.
