nogs Posted August 28, 2015 Report Share Posted August 28, 2015 To be fair the Argentinian league may not be up to European Top 5 standards but to win a title, a Copa Sudamericana and most impressively a Copa Libertadores by the age of 24 is pretty impressive. Makes me wonder why a team with traditionally strong links to South America (Benfica, PSV, Ajax) haven't picked up on him but maybe they try to identify talent at a younger age. Whatever, he comes here with some pedigree, and scoring in a Super Classico and a Libertadores final is quite an achievement, certainly not awed by the big occasion. Look forward to seeing what he can do. For comparison, Demichelis left River Plate at 23 and played 170 odd times for Bayern, Otamendi left Velez Sarsfield at 22 for Porto, Rojo left Estudiantes at 21 for a brief stint at Spartak Moscow before ending up at Sporting. So all three played a decent amount of league football in Argentina before establishing themselves as top class centre backs in Europe. I imagine it's that high because someone wanted to save face at the club after he had been in Liverpool for over a week when the price was re-negotiated.
