I think trying threaded balls plays into a defending sides strengths mate.

As long as they are organised it's pretty much impossible to break through.

What you need is someone to burst from a deeper position and outnumber them, which is where the energy comes in.

Lookman was a good shout because he came on and ran at them.

I agree mate. We needed to get the ball out wide and get accurate crosses into the box. We needed to put that defence under constant bombardment. In my opinion there was no need for Davies or Barry in that game. We needed 2 centre forwards and a midfielder coming in from deep to overload their defence.

Yes, put them on the back foot and give them too many players to deal with. They would make mistakes or the discipline would slip.

Barry excels at passing, vision, through balls. Those were the 3 things needed to break down their parked bus. Davies offers energy, which doesn't help against a team that isn't moving.

think that's a bit generous but agree with the idea

Those players are marking the players you pass to.

You need to run past one to outnumber them. If you rely on passes alone, you are making it a 1 v 1 game. If a team is organised and disciplined, you are playing into their hands.

Having a Barkley storm past two players suddenly opens up a space as a defender needs to come and close him down... which leaves a space. When Messi breaks, Barca usually score.

That's my views and not anything other than opinion.

never seen a player dribble their way through a parked bus. the defender blocks the path, tackles them, or simple jockeys to block their running angles. funny, pep who sees that tactic all the time doesn't advocate dribbling through either, instead it's passing through to one another.

otherwise if you were right and running into space is the great equalizer to defeating parking the bus, martinez teams would have demolished teams because barkley is one of the most natural with the ball at his feet. not the case at all. he ran straight into the defense which left little to no lanes to run.

Seen it many times mate.

Martinez teams were possession and small pass teams. Not sure who you were watching.

Martinez problem was facing the parked bus. He found time after time he couldn't pass through an organised defence.

This is why the top teams have an unlock player. A player that can conjure a piece of magic, Hazard, Messi, Ronaldo, Suarez, these are all players that can easily ghost past a player. Heck we even have Lukaku who does it.

And Messi? Really? He is one of the best I have ever saw at dropping a shoulder and stepping past a player.

So surprised you haven't had the joy of watching him.

But again,.. it's just an opinion. I don't have to be proven right or wrong. If you don't agree... I'm ok with that.

For me you should pepper the goal from distance when there's no way through. Barkley should hit it as hard as he can, but make sure it's on target. Lukaku and Mirallas to follow up the shot and make a run at the keeper.

Once the opposition click on to your plan, mix it up. Once the defence start closing down a shot, pulling them out of position, leaving a gap behind to exploit. Drilled crosses help as well. Key is keeping the ball in play, and with a bit of luck the scramble falls in your favour.

Early crosses work well, too.

Basically, anything that keeps the bus from getting parked in the first place is what you need. If we don't have the tricky player who can dink little balls over the top, we need wingers to run up the touch line and put balls in the box. Or, we overload them up top and hope they don't get us on the counter.

how can you run with the ball when there are 11 men in front of you blocking the route? passes.

The man with the ball beats a player - it then gives you one more player to attack than they have to defend with.. simple.

It also often means that a team set up to defend will have to tackle or intercept.... You don't win penalties and free kicks from passes. A runner of the ball with quick feet can win free kicks.

Beating your man in midfield only gets you to the next phase of play, and that is where everything is tight and hard to play a killer ball through. Unless you time your run perfectly, and the ball is released quick enough. Only player in our team who can consistently play that pass is Davies. You need at least three for it to be effective and efficient like Arsenal, Liverpool, and City.

Beating your man in midfield means that the other opposition players have a choice to make - stick with marking your team mate and allow you to carry on advancing with the ball or leave that player and close you down which frees up the team mate to receive a pass.

Look at how Chelsea score against parked buses... hazard takes on one man - beats him and leaves the next defender with a nightmare. Quite often he will them play a give and go before netting.

We don't have the players to do that. Barkley takes on his man, but doesn't make the next decision quick enough.

Hazard also has a decent shot to make them worry about. We have Barkley who more often than not skys it, if he hasn't run into a tunnel after beating the first player. Worst part is that you can tell he sees the option(s) , but hesitation gets the better of him. He sees a pass through, but doesn't make the pass quick enough.

The longer Barkley spends making the decision the lower the opportunity of scoring, the defenders get into position and close the angles. Yet, the numpties will then blame Lukaku for losing the ball in the area.

Any how, I'll stop moaning about Barkley, cracking player is Tom

If anyone plays a ball to Romelu with the expectation that he will hold it up and lay it off whilst they run through, in a simple give and go move, then they will be disappointed.

He will either turn and shoot or over hit the pass and kill the move.

If you want to look at how to break down a dogged defence then watch Man Utd in their pomp. Giggs would get wide and go past a fullback and then get the ball into the box with venom.

He would mix it up, sometimes looking to put it on the strikers head, sometimes play it low and hard across the 6 yard line. It was just playing the percentages but the chances were that if you didn't score then you would get a corner or a defender would put it through his own net.

Now in relation to Tom Davies, this isn't his forte. Davies is great when we play teams that like to hold possession. He hurries them up and they end up going long and losing possession again, then when he gets the ball he has the quality to initiate a counter attack.

But the West Ham game it was the right call to replace him with Ademola Lookman. We needed a player to go past a man and put balls into the box. It was just that our whole attacking line was impotent that day.

Which is why I strongly suggest we sell lukaku for the supposed money that we can get and buy in a more rounded forward - not just a finisher who likes one v ones.

Attack after attack breaks down because of his inability to play intricate football or hold it up. Yes... he does have some assists and yes once in a while a nice flick comes off like it did for Valencia but overall this aspect of his game is badly lacking.

Davies is a give and go type of player.

5 v 5

One player beats a man

5 v 4

Defence needs to cover running player and leaves a hole.

How often do you get 5 v 5 though? In open play, we hardly ever get 5 forward and even if we did, most teams (particularly those who park the bus) make it 8 v 5.

The way to score against park the bus is to have someone who has a good leap and can score headers, or be adept (Hazard like) at quick one/two's on the edge of the area. We don't have either.

Don't disagree at all.

It's those fast moving types that break open the parked bus. Whether it is a player running past with a ball or without a ball.... you still need to be very mobile.

I don't think a stylish passer of the ball like Barry is that type though.

I think we need a pienaar type player again.

Certainly was too early. Lookman at half was a good shout and Gana had the card, so I would have left Davies on for a bit longer.

But credit to the manager for making changes. Was certainly needed, just didn't have the desired effect.

Some goods points on both sides on the Davies/Barry swap. My point was that it was way too early. Certainly a key pass from Barry would have helped but waiting for 45 mins and it never happening while supporting his slow pace made for some boring viewing.
