Things were a bit different then.

Found an old BBC (Manchester) Contract in some old papers of my Dad. It was for a programme to be broadcast on 21 December 1938 (I was 2 years old). We lived in Wyndham Road Wallasey.

The programme was called 'Flippant Fingers' and Dad (pianist) was to provide 'syncopated pianoforte solo'.

Time of the broadcast was 1.15 - 1.30 pm and the duration of the performance - approximately 13 minutes.

(Rehearsal - 12.15 pm.)

Fees: 3 pounds 3 shillings plus seven shillings and one penny expenses.

Fee for 'Mechanical Reproduction Overseas = fifteen shillings and ninepence.

(Payable only if Broadcast Overseas)

Buy you a pie and a pint these days and in some places you wouldn't get the pie.

John - what about this one in 1940? Your father was named Charles, right? He was on the same segment as Beryl Reid.

It must have been a success, because, twice soon after, he was playing alongside a brass sextet.

A few years later, he was playing in his own sextet.

Bloody good money that John for 1938!

My first Saturday job (in about 1974) I got less than that for a full day, £3.

Mind you tickling the ivories probably took a bit more talent than selling fruit & veg .

And here he is in 1950, playing as part of a sextet.

And he's listed in six places here.

Thanks Steve. Yes, Dad did a lot of broadcasting from the end of the war and up to the early 1950's. He did lots of 'Workers Playtimes' 'Music While You Work' and his sextet was resident band for a programme called 'Fanfare' which ran every week. He appeared on the same bill as Peter Sellers once, I have a newspaper cutting of the cast list. Mind you, it was before Peter Sellers was famous. He appeared as 'Peter Sellers and his voices'. He was an impressionist!

If you key in Michael Henesy and Paul Henesy (brothers) you will find them in genome. I'm the only one that no one knows!
