Weirdness Abounds (or the Idrissa Gana Gueye Thread)

Hmmm. Yeah I'm sure.... in sure they were fuming when he rattled that one in against west ham in the fa cup final... the exocet that rescued the game against Olympiakos that led to them winning the champions league.

Pete.... I hate the fact that he had a great shot - were you not sick of it against us?

Sickening was we give them lot the easiest hattrick you will ever see. Alonso was much better for Liverpool, being Johnny English Gerrard got all the plaudits. Gerrard was a all rounder in a league of specialist and thankfully so as he held Liverpool back. Imagine if they had a proper AM instead of him.

Oh come off it! I can't imagine anyone in world football that could have done what he did for them. As much as we all hated him - he was a world class player. I was so happy when he retired as he single handedly destroyed Everton everytime we played them. Even at 35 he still took the piss. He carried them for a good 12 years. The amount of times he scored a last minute winner or changed a game was unreal. You have to respect him for that. He was an awesome footballer.

I hoped Barkley would develop into something similar but I'm still yet to see him take a game by the scruff of a neck and win it on his own. I don't know if it's in him and he's 23 now so time's ticking.

Pete... I don't actually think you do believe Gerrard was this player you describe... I actually think you know jags has been a solid defender for us. I think you are being intentionally different as per your comments about gana.

Trying to ignore something so glaringly obvious in order to point out something that "fans may miss".... it's as if you are trying to trying to tell the world that Heinz baked beans are shite and asda smart price beans are far nicer.

Alonso was a fantastic footballer - Gerrard called him the best passer of the football he played with. He was. He was like a better version of Michael Carrick.

But you are off your head if you think for one second that Gerrard wouldn't have got in any side in the world at his peak. Some great players do some things brilliantly - Gerrard could do most things brilliantly.

He held Liverpool back? FFS give your head a wobble. He more or less won them 3 or 4 trophies on his own.

Lad I work with who goes home and away with the shite and has done for 30 plus years was always moaning about Gerrard. Used to say any other player would mis-place a pass and the crowd would be screaming at them. Gerrard done it and theybwould all clap and shout "unlucky Stevie lad"

Used to go on about it all the time that it done his head in that he was always above critisism.

From BBC:

"The Senegal international made more tackles (five) than any other player on the pitch, had the most touches (92) and made more passes than any other midfielder. He even managed a rare shot on target."

Thought he had a massive impact on the game. City will hate his in the face approach next week.

I think some things might need to be clarified with Gana. He isn't creative and he doesn't do anything special on the ball but he doesn't stop moving and that's how he creates his space.

If we play a defensive team with little space he will look average. Put him against a side that are looking to attack, leave space or with others that create space his movement will get him into really good positions like last night. For a terrible finisher he has scored 2 really nicely taken goals for us!

One of our most effective attacking players last night, and took his goal really well. Not bad for a player that can't attack and is shit on the ball.

One goal doesn't show a true reflection. He's very uncomfortable going forward. I could show you a clip of Crouch scoring a worldie doesn't mean he's any good.

Defensively he got on the wrong side of their man and went to ground giving them even more of a chance. Very amateur. Odd that no one seems arsed about that.

I thought Gueye was pretty much spot on in everything he did last night... comfortable on the ball, passed it well and finished a great move.

Only you could find a reason to criticise him.

This. He was unbelievable last night. Off the ball he was everywhere. Any counter attack he seemed to be there and get a tackle in. His range of passing was good as well plus he chipped in with a goal. Can't ask much more from your defensive midfielder. He is quality.

Every player does something wrong per game!

There was a moment when the much applauded Pickford did a terrible pass along the ground right to one of their guys who was in acres of space. It was awful. Luckily it cone to nothing.

There's not one player out there who doesn't put a foot wrong at some point.

It's not just last night though. The lad, more often than not, is a top performer for us. He's Mr. Consistent. I don't see this player that is shocking on the ball like you do. Yeah, he does misplace places and makes mistakes, but for me he does far more positive things than negative.

The missplaced passes are very poor though. It's like he's got tunnel vision and can't see the opposition as he just passes it straight to them.

For me the negative are such basic things that it way the positives. He's a runner and doesn't give up but he's not a natural footballer. Doesn't have the brain or the feet. I'd rather have Davies in his position.

I really really don't understand the player you're describing; he's one of the first names on our teamsheet for me, been a huge asset since he first arrived.

He was the burst of energy we needed after the players got leggy under Martinez but since Christmas there is a massive gulf in footballing ability between him and the rest of the players.

Against stoke gueye had an 86% pass completion...

Last night will have been higher...

He could have a 99% pass rate but I'd still own with the one he gives away if it's completely school boy stuff. You used to moan about lukaku giving it away near the corner flag. Gana does it in the middle of the park.
