Cornish Steve
When I returned a few weeks ago for my dad's funeral, my brother and I stopped by the local church in Gerrans, Cornwall. On the wall is a plaque listing all the men in the parish who served in WW-I - among them my grandfather and two great-uncles. My grandfather was pressured to sign up under age (and the army was prepared to lie to achieve this) and was still a teen when fighting at the Somme. Some of the stories he told us were horrific. Even at the age of 93, he wrote me a letter about waking up in a sweat one night: He heard thunder and woke up believing he was back in the trenches. He never forgot the war and the friends and colleagues he lost there, and I will never forget him and the millions of others who did their duty to protect their loved ones.
