Keith B Posted November 30, 2017 Report Share Posted November 30, 2017 I am at peace with the appointment as well. He's a proven manager and will ensure we don't get into a relegation scrap. I think he is going to surprise us and get us in the top half. It's not a simple job but he's got loads of experience to lean on and supportive ownership that will spend money in January. Best case scenario is we finish in 8/9/10 but our young players continue to develop, especially Kenny, Davies, DCL, and Benny. Riscon Posted December 1, 2017 Report Share Posted December 1, 2017 The best signing we could hope for in the circumstances. We absolutely could not let ourselves be relegated, Sam guarantees safety. One thing to point out is Sam has never been in charge of a team with money and a very decent ( albeit poorly performing) squad, he has always taken on teams that are low on talent. But we need to sign a left back, central defender and a striker in the window. One thing is for certain, you can forget the school of science, its not gonna be pretty! Here's hoping he can find a centre half and midfielder this January. If he could get someone out Anelka's talent too I think the fans will be on side pretty quickly. It will be an easy job to get us into the top half, but the real test is getting our lads to perform at important times. Something neither Martinez or Koeman could manage. Of course it’s a big part of it but if he was just after the money he’d of gone to Palace or Sunderland again and got paid. I think he’s here to prove a point and he believes it’s a chance to prove everyone wrong. Still gutted it’s happened but I have no doubt he’s here to give it his all and not just for a final pay day. Makis Posted December 1, 2017 Report Share Posted December 1, 2017 As far I can gather, Allardyce was not sacked from the England job because he was crooked but because what he said about the big wigs at the FA. What exactly did he do in that interview? Tell how to circumvent some rules but he also said you'd get caught doing it. The main problem was seemingly his other comments and frankly a disgusting quip toward Hodgson. If he had done something illegal why didn't he end up in court? Now, this doesn't prove he's clean as a whistle either, but so far there has been no concrete evidence to prove otherwise. I think Allardyce is underrated as a manager. There are managers who have done about as much or less and are regarded more highly. He's not the top manager we all hoped for and his teams don't play exciting football but why is someone like Dyche a more preferrable choice? What has he done? Both have won promotion from the Championship. Dyche plays an even more defensive style. For getting the club out of this mess, Allardyce is probably the safest bet. He's not considered to be a long-term solution as his 18 month contract suggests. The managers seen as being both able to fix the current situation and being able to stay long-term were not available (although Silva has not been at any club for long). Villa tried to solve a crisis with a foreign manager and that didn't end well. The critical thing is how he and Walsh gets on with the job. The very first thing is to steady the ship. Wednesday's win should help. I expect two or three important signings in January and looking at Allardyce's last two appointments when he needed to make signings that help immediately he didn't make stop-gap signings. Out of the total of eight signings he has done during the last two January windows, only one was over 30. And they were not bad signings, being instrumental in saving the clubs from relegation. He didn't have the best of times at West Ham in the latter stages of his stay there including some questionable signings, but his work at Bolton was superb. He basically had no transfer budget and had to juggle with loanees. At Blackburn he had to balance the books but on hindsight he could spot a player then, too. I was talking to a few before the game and I asked who’d they’d rather have, Sam back or Moyes. Every one of them said they’d rather Sam had come back. There’s a lot of snobbery surrounding Allardyce- biy hypocritical from me as I don’t want him here either but West Ham fans at the time wanted him out because they thought they were better than him. Not watched his press conference today either; hoping to wake up soon and realise it's all just a bad dream.
