They had our pants down with Keane and then bringing in this lad for a fraction. Hopefully we can give them Keane back in any deal.

To be fair to him he is starting to justify his fee, especially in todays market. £25m for a (for the most part) sturdy PL CB isn't a bad price.

He was in his last year so in theory we were getting him cheap, yet we'd brops just break even on him thanks to football inflation. In todays market that fee would be £70+m if you look at Maguire (who was the cheaper option at the time).

This needs sorting…

Hopefully we get Anthony Barry too - Chelsea’s set piece specialist coach who happens to be an Evertonian with a young family wanting to move back up north 👍🏼

I think he’s a kopite but a local lad yeah.

OK, it says we are going to offer £120K a week. What are peoples preference - Do we offer a 29year old a £120k/week (say 4 year), do this or say to the likes of Branthwaithe and Godfrey  - right stake your claims in this side, lets see how good you are? You two are going to start the first dozen games of next season. At the same time it puts down the gauntlet to other bright youngsters - and show them Everton is where you go if you want first team Premiership football.

Paying Tarkowski big wages is not a particularly inventive transfer strategy.

I think that this is something that should not be overly difficult to sort out for an experienced back room staff. Lampard and his team came in mid-season changed the way we play and been a lot of forced changes in team though injuries. This in itself has resulting in giving lots of goals away from set pieces, but also from individual defending errors. I would like to think we could get closer to the Premier league average of around 13 without having to break the bank in the transfer window. Add that to cutting out some of the individual errors and maybe saves 15 or so goals a season. Just that improvement in the team would put us mid table. You know they are going to focus hard on this type of think in pre season.

Stupid wages but no transfer fee, kinda balance out I think

but in 4 years time he is worth fuck all and we are short a CB it also keeps a young Godfrey or Branthwaithe out of the team and they don't develop.

Also if he turn out a bit crap - nobody else will take him off our hands with £120K wages.

Wages like that just feels like a groundhog day type signing.

I’ve just read on sky sports we have offered him 90k a week.

It’s just the going rate. I’m seeing most places report £90k per week. That’s under £19m in four years (though I reckon a three year deal would be more likely given his age). Probably takes a couple of million in a signing on fee too, so call it £21m. He hardly ever gets injured. In his six years at Burnley he’s played 198 times.

We signed Mina four years ago for £27m, he’s apparently on £125k per week, that’s £26m in wages, so £53m (maybe a couple of million signing on too), he’s made 79 appearances in that time.

If Tarkowski turns out to be crap, so be it. He’ll have cost relatively little in that time. Over a four year period he would have cost less than Godfreys transfer fee alone, and he’s never really been first choice in his two years at the club.

It’s a relatively risk free transfer.

Worth getting in but I wouldn’t want to see him and Keane starting together. Godfrey can start but if he continues to be iffy then we need someone reliable to come in for him - ideally I’d like us to sign a proper quality CB with Tarkovsky as the back up.

Branthwaite whist he has loads of potential is no where near ready to be first team or first choice back up. Cup games yes, extra CB to see out the last 10/15 of game perhaps although that’s Tarkovsky’s bread and butter.

If we had money to spend then I would be looking at a more mobile player.

however we don’t and we need leadership, character, and numbers in the back who can defend.

our main risk is set pieces and this lad is very good, if he came in on a transfer fee he would be on £60k a week. So the extra makes him a £5m transfer.  We are saving a million a week in wages after the players leave this summer.

And that is what we need CB who can defend set pieces he is one of the the best in the league at clearing the ball with his head, and years at Burnley have taught him how to defend under pressure, he would be great bit of business in a position that we require some stability in. Lampard is reportedly looking for 2 CBs so him and one other, then we can off load any 2 of these Mina, Keane, Holgate, and Godfrey, and keep Branthwaite to develop him further.

If he serves his purpose and brings stability to the defence it won't be a loss. If he's not then we've gambled taking on a seasoned professional on a free, rather than gambling on any other transfer with a fee.
