Dutch winger Andy van der Meyde has branded Gary Naysmith a "Scottish fool" after the Everton defender shadowed him throughout the Euro 2004 play-off first leg at Hampden Park on Saturday.

The Inter Milan man, one of few Dutch players to emerge from the shock 1-0 defeat by Scotland with their reputations intact, was not at all impressed by Naysmith's man-marking qualities.

In an interview with Dutch TV, van der Meyde, claims the reason he played so well was down to Naysmith playing like a "blind man."

"It was hard for me out there when I had that Scottish fool breathing down my neck," van der Meyde said.

"The longer the game went, the more that defender became crazy. He just didn't know what to do.

"That is why I played so well. He played like a blind man. He didn't play with his mind.

"He only saw one thing the whole game - me, not the ball."

Funny old world.
