  1. Just finished a few books while I was in the field doing research (sun sets at 6pm and no electricity so lots of time to read in the tent via headlamp). A Constellation of Vital Phenomena -- great, heart-breaking novel about the recent Chechnya-Russian conflict. The Bees -- fictional account of bees in a bee hive that very surprisingly works and I learned a lot about bees (would make a great animated film) The Gone Away World -- excellent and funny post-apocalypse fiction with ninjas and mimes and the like The Numbers Game -- great "money ball" type analysis applied to soccer The Power of the Dog -- long and really compelling, violent, crime novel about the USA-Mexico drug trade and narcos
  2. Whoa!! That is crazy stuff. Like MikeO, after reading the original description I thought there would be a punchline. But it's real and it sounds freaky. I won't follow the instructions about how to induce it...no thanks.
  3. Welcome, I'm nearby you, out in Harrisonburg VA where I teach at JMU.
  4. Just got back from Madagascar and have learned of our poor performances. On the other hand, the official Everton website has a new facelift
  5. I'm on my way to Madagascar for 5 weeks but had a nice stop off in Paris and got to see some good rugby, including England vs. Canada in the final game (my girlfriend is the manager of the US women's national team so she got me a ticket). Lots of fun and a great atmosphere. Women's rugby has come a long way and the stadium was pretty packed, particularly for the France-Ireland game before the England game. I'd post a photo but I can't from my crappy phone. Anyways, we fly to Madagascar tomorrow (she also is a lemur researcher as well). See you all later.
  6. Decent read, not sure if I agree with the comparison to the NY Mets; someone here on this forum made a better analogy with the Oakland A's; Everton find young talent, or take old talent and make it better, then sell off the talent. But analogies are American sports writer's favorite "go-to" heuristic device when writing about soccer...they sound clever at first but are generally useless. The comment section on that thread is atrocious.
  7. Welcome agbaby. Sounds like you all can start a Des MoinesToffees affiliate. I grew up in Chicago and went down state to Champaign-Urbana for college, but now I live in Virginia. Iowa/Illinois, so flat you can watch your dog run away for 3 days. (old joke)
  8. Been listening to this album as of late...damn, it's really good.
  9. And again, no #13. Not for many years have we had someone with that number...strange. Maybe Atsu will take it.
  10. Welcome to the forum; I'm another yank here. Where you at in Iowa?
  11. I usually put a number on the back but no name. Either my favorite number (usually 13), or a number of a player on the team that I like. But no name. Go with 23 and no Coleman...cheaper anyways.
  12. Yes, pre-season doesn't mean much, but it is data; and given the data I hope we are lucky to get a draw. Obviously would love a better result.
