I wonder if there will be any money left over to get some more Wigan players in January

Agree 100%. Baines deserves to be playing in the highest competition in the world and to be England's #1 left-back. He's been brilliant and loyal to Everton. There aren't many players of his caliber around.

I have so much pride in saying that he plays for us -- A consummate professional to the highest degree.

20m is 2/3rds of the way there, and yes Im serious. Utd paid 24m-ish for RVP with 12 months on his contract because of his prolific scoring. Baines - as repeatedly pointed out - created the most goal scoring opportunities in Europe. You pay 20m for the player at least, the rest is for what he will provide for RVP and the rest of the team.
Despite all that, keep in mind 3 things:

    1. Baines has stated how excited he is to work with Martinez, and will be offered a new deal. This is not a man stating his unhappiness and eagerness to leave, nor has he ever come across as a money-grabbing sucess-hunter. Hes playing for his childhood team and always comes across as happy at Everton
    2. the last offer was rejected with a call of "dont bother coming back". I think only if contract negotiations go tits up, will we actually see another offer materialize.

Sky Bet have cut his odds to 1/5 to join Norwich after some big bets. If we miss out on him we must be mental - £2million is nothing in todays current market for a promising young english player

Darren Bent - alright he is 29 but has proved he can score in the prem. 172 appearances for Spurs, Sunderland and Villa and 72 goals scored. He should come with a point to prove and its a world cup season. Has had his injury problems recently but this isn't down to an underlying issue and being kept out of the side by Benteke when he has been fit.

I think to dismiss Martinez - you first need to make the following allowances:

£ spend per point earned (my guess is he will be near the top) based on transfer fees alone he was 4th as at Jan 2012 (even considering a 17th place finish) http://espnfc.com/columns/story/_/id/1087025/ask-norman:-the-cost-effective-premier-league-table?cc=5901
How many players do they lose to bigger teams each year?
How have injuries impacted his team?
Taking everything into account I believe he is one of the better managers in the league, it's more of a risk United taking Moyes than it is for us taking Martinez.

Haf your going on about needing a balanced argument and then you spout this waffle

Some of the football we played in 2012 calendar year was superb and you make out we had about 3 good games or something. You back Martinez saying that injuries are to blame for them going down yet ignore the injuries Everton have had. Gibson, Mirallas and Coleman are all integral to the way we play and have all been out for lengthy periods of the season

There is a saying in football that you have to earn the right to play football and I think its spot on. Martinez isn't the first ,manager whose side has stuck to its footballing principals but more often than not those sides have played pretty football all the way down to the Championship

As I said earlier I am coming around to the idea of Martinez but there are big reservations about his defensive record, he had four years to sort out Wigans defence and failed miserably. That said I also had reservations about Pereria and his lack of experience outside of Portugal, so I don't think any of the names linked were ideal but we simply aren't going to attract the top managers

For me Martinez is probably about as good as we can hope for at the moment and obviously if he takes the job I hope he is successful

Was that the case when he first took charge of Everton?

I think the situation Martinez was in and the situation Moyes inherited when he first took over are quite comparable, yet Moyes managed to stabilise the club and gradually build it to take us away from the threat of relegation and turn us into regular top 8 finishers

Its not like he came in and threw loads of money at the problem

How do you know there isn't a direction? We have apparently interviewed people for the role which suggests things are moving along. If we get to July and there is nobody in the role we would be well within our rights to have the hump about it. As far as I can see there isn't a wealth of talent sitting idly around so any new manager is most likely managing somewhere which is an added complication not just time wise but financially - the plus side though is we probably arent getting Hughes or O'Neill given they are unattached and could have been appointed in days
