MikeO
I've got £30 worth of book tokens from my birthday (you'd think my mother would have more imagination for my fiftieth wouldn't you? Better than last year though when I got a piece of cheese....she's a bit eccentric ) plus a £5 WH Smith discount voucher burning a hole in my pocket. What should I get? I seem to remember that you liked reading Catch-22 by Heller? If that's the case I'd buy "A Confederacy of Dunces" by John Kennedy Toole (if you don't have it yet). Both are among my favorite books of all time. Best non-fiction I've read in the past year was "The Great Transformation" by Karen Armstrong. It's about the origin of religion. MikeO
Good memory! Catch-22 is probably my favourite of all time (though "The Book Thief" has run it close recently). I'll check those out.
holystove
Well I am a lawyer so my whole professional existence depends on a good memory ... Seriously though I was half expecting you to reply "Of course I've already read The Confederacy of Dunces". Seeing how it has the same humor as Catch-22 and is the same kind of cult classic. Currently reading : "So little done. The testament of a serial killer" by Theodore Dalrymple.
MikeO
Didn't have Confederacy of Dunces in the shop (and I'm too impatient to wait) so I'll have to get it from the library . I got... Richard Dawkins-The Greatest Show on Earth Obama's autobiography. The Kite Runner which I've been meaning to read for ages. The Blackest Streets by Sarah Wise (The life and death of a Victorian Slum) ..and a big cook book .

holystove
I read Rainbow Six last year and enjoyed it so much that when I saw a box with all the Clancy's for only € 68 at my local bookstore, I decided to buy them. Probably am going to read them in the order they were written unless someone has a suggestion with which I should start..

MikeO
Read "The Kite Runner" while I was away. Very good but not quite the work of genius it's made out to be imo. Brilliant cultural stuff but the story is a bit contrived and sometimes too obvious I think. Re-read "The Book Thief" (the last 250 pages yesterday) and that is a work of genius ......probably my second favourite book of all time. holystove
Executive Orders by Tom Clancy. Horrible book. It's 1300 pages and it easily could have been half that. It reads like the political manifesto of an out of touch libertarian.

MikeO
Just bought the new Terry Pratchett book "I Shall Wear Midnight" Not started it yet though. So you're not reading it then are you . My time's valuable you know and I just wasted fifteen seconds of my life navigating to this page to find what? An inaccurate and misleading post. Start a "What book have you just bought?" thread next time please <_< . Now where did I put my pills ?
rubecula
I did you a favour there MikeO. You had nothing to add to the thread (What Are You Reading) until you took the time and effort to read my post. See I do favours for folks too. As it happens I am reading one of a numerous number of books called "2012" this one being by Manda Scott. The Terry Pratchett book is next. MikeO
I am currently reading today's Independent. Not bought a paper for ages but had to take Josh to the orthodontist this morning to get his brace fitted...was quite time consuming so I thought I'd have a read. Sadly I forgot to take my glasses so all I could see were the headlines and the pictures . Consequently reading it now....waste of £1 not to . Blue 250
"Trautmann's Journey" By Catrine Clay. Christmas present!....The story of Bert Trautmann. The Manchester City goalkeeper, he of the 'broken neck', then played on for 16 mins in a cup final. I had read somewhere he had been a prisoner of war, but never realised his incredable story.Hitler youth, Russian front!....after capture was working on a bomb disposal unit in liverpool. Stayed in England after the war and became a one of the worlds greatest goalkeeper. Quote from the book" "The team Bert loved to watch most in those early days was Everton".....he thought Ted Sager (Everton goalkeeper) was the man to learn from. When he retired 47,000 fans attended his testimonial.
