Little Curly Alan Ball Posted June 10, 2015 Report Posted June 10, 2015 Would love this to happen the most assists in europe's top leagues last season. Quote
JoeQuince Posted June 10, 2015 Report Posted June 10, 2015 This is the kind of transfer I think we all want to see. A playmaker who can slot in and improve us immediately. Sibdane 1 Quote
Stuie Hayllor Posted June 10, 2015 Report Posted June 10, 2015 Class player and a proper no 10. It's nice to see a top player linked with us rather than constantly reading that our best players are unhappy with broken promises and looking to leave the club. More of this please Quote
Lowensda Posted June 10, 2015 Report Posted June 10, 2015 Definitely. Andy Hunter (Guardian), also one of the few reliable journos, wrote that piece and has been back by other proffessionals on his source. Which is interesting. Proper signing that. Quote
Stuie Hayllor Posted June 10, 2015 Report Posted June 10, 2015 Might actually have legs, this one. Any idea how much he'd cost? Quote
Romey 1878 Posted June 11, 2015 Report Posted June 11, 2015 With Martinez saying we've got a player in the system that will be ready to play the number 10 role in the next few years it'd make sense that we'd bring in an experienced player for this position for the short-term, so it could very well be true. Quote
Kant Posted June 11, 2015 Report Posted June 11, 2015 I don't really like it. Not because I do not like the player -tbh I don't have an opinion-, but because the position of AMC is Barkley's best. If last season he was not getting played in that position without this player, will he be again played in the left next season? Cleverley, Gibson, McCarthy, Besic, Barry, Barkley, Osman and now this chap are far too many for the DM/CM/AMC, unless one of them plays regularly on the wing and/or someone is leaving. Even considering Osman as a LMF, still too many. I assume the starters are McCarthy, Barry and Barkley in top form (not my preference, but what I think RM would do). Would he drop Barkley instead of give him more responsibility? Quote
Makis Posted June 11, 2015 Report Posted June 11, 2015 Where did you get the idea AMC is Barkley's best position? Frankly he has been quite poor in that position and doesn't seem to have the qualities either. His best position is playing deeper in the midfield where he can make runs with the ball. Quote

Frankly he has been quite poor in that position and doesn't seem to have the qualities either. His best position is playing deeper in the midfield where he can make runs with the ball. I have never seen him defend or do something remarkable deep in midfield. If I'm not mistaken, he's been on record saying that he plays better behind the striker. Besides, he has no tactical acumen (yet) of when to play it simple, when to play long, when to play short and when to dribble, which makes him a liability deep in midfield. To be honest, I see him better a-la-Gerrard (a few years ago), playing with a DM as Mascherano and a CM as Xabi Alonso and him doing a bit of free roaming, going wherever his talent tells him to, scoring goals with his great strike and powerful runs. Quote
Makis Posted June 11, 2015 Report Posted June 11, 2015 So in any case, he does not play the same position as Payet. Quote
Little Curly Alan Ball Posted June 11, 2015 Report Posted June 11, 2015 Payet is far far better than Barkley as an attacking midfielder, but i doubt we will be in for him he has never played for Wigan. Quote

Lowensda Posted June 12, 2015 Report Posted June 12, 2015 West ham now linked to him that's us out then he will want to go to the capital + more wages. And two of his Marseille buddies have joined recently. Quote
Romey 1878 Posted June 24, 2015 Report Posted June 24, 2015 Sky are saying he's having talks with West Ham next week. Quote
Lowensda Posted June 24, 2015 Report Posted June 24, 2015 I thought it was done? Getting 10k bonus for every appearance or something? Quote
Romey 1878 Posted June 25, 2015 Report Posted June 25, 2015 I thought it was done? Getting 10k bonus for every appearance or something? No idea. It's today he's holding talks, not next week, anyway. Dunno where I got next week from! Quote
Hafnia Posted June 25, 2015 Report Posted June 25, 2015 (edited) agreed to join west ham - probably offered him £90k a week. Not far off.... £70k a week. Edited June 25, 2015 by Hafnia Quote
Hafnia Posted June 25, 2015 Report Posted June 25, 2015 Everything I said would happen is happening. The increased money is allowing other teams to blow us out the water using their irresponsible financial decisions. Making big gambles. Players who want to come to us will come but players who are motivated by cash won't. It all makes way for a continuation of the greed we have seen. Quote

Which is exactly the type of player we want at the club. I take your point but ultimately clubs trying to buy success by paying over the odds for players with questionable motivation won't succeed I don't think. How many teams over the last decade have people thought we'd be overtaken by due to takeover/cash injection/big spending? None of them have and several are no longer in the top flight; I disagree that we'll be "blown out of the water" by anyone making stupid buys. Quote

JoeQuince Posted June 25, 2015 Report Posted June 25, 2015 I was really hoping we would be in for this one. He will be good for West Ham. It's a shame about the wage thing. Quote

I should have acknowledged City as the obvious exception in that; but that was "bottomless pit spending with no worry about consequences" spending so a bit different from Newcastle, Villa, Blackburn, Portsmouth etc. Quote
Hafnia Posted June 25, 2015 Report Posted June 25, 2015 Hmmm to a you are right but the reality is some very very good players will go for the money and do a very good job. It's lovely to get a player who goes with his heart, but quality is the key factor. Quote

It's lovely to get a player who goes with his heart, but quality is the key factor. Can't argue with that, but I would say this debate depends on one question: are you a pragmatist or a romantic? I'm certainly more the latter and believe in soul over silverware, if there's a choice to be made. Ideal world, I'd take both of course! Quote
c1982 Posted August 9, 2015 Report Posted August 9, 2015 He was brilliant today. Let's hope we can get Shaqiri in to be that creative spark that we've clearly missed out on in Payet. Quote
