Exacerbate that's the word of the week😉 I think we might see more use of that.

We have talk and critique his performance we call it when he's good and praise him look at how many votes and good comments he gets on motm, so when he fucks up we must be allowed to call it especially when he is committing some howlers and acting like a clown, his performance against Newcastle was worthy of being shown on red nose day and he needs to hear the criticism and he might learn from the errors of his ways.

Aye I can fully expect Pickford to be listening to the criticism of fans on forums, half of which have probably never played the game other than in the playground, and the 90% of the rest who have never played a proper game of football between the sticks. Some people on here are blaming him for not saving a deflected shot from less than 10 yards out FFS!

Pickforf will listen to his manage and he will listen to the GK coaches because if he doesnt he will find himself out of the side.

Why do you think playing the game gives someone more of a credible opinion than someone else?  I played from a young age to my 30's at a reasonable amateur level but I know that there are many fans of the game who have more knowledge than me who never played.

Some of the best players in the world have opinions that don't count for shit.

Thats a load of rubbish. If you havent experienced those situations you dont know how to react to them, you just have a theoretical knowledge of what to do. Also if that was the case, you would have managers with no footballing experience.

You mean like villas boas, arrigo sacchi who said “I never realised that in order to become a jockey you have to have been a horse first.”

Avram grant, les parry, the Brazil manager who won the 94 world cup.

So you know for a fact that these players never played the game?

Sacchi for example played amatuer football.

That quote also makes no sense.

He failed to get into Amateur football...  relative to managing a team to world cup glory how does his experience of the game as a player who couldnt get into an amateur side help him manage the best players in the world???

It clearly hasn't.

Give credit where its due - that was the type of performance i expect to see from a keeper of his reputation. Did the things I wanted to see.  Less about him but stood out for right reasons.

Just did his job and did it well. Good stuff Jordan.

There are managers who have never played professionally.

You've tried to use your experience to bolster your own opinions over someone else's.

Personally think goalkeeping is quite specialist and would tend to vere on the side of someone with keeper experience. Remember Zoo or Kohen being quite insightful on the position.

I use my experience of playing to add a perspective - it doesn't mean that it's right.

I can't play the game as well as someone like Robbie Savage because he was a pro..... doesn't mean I can't say he's shite compared to Zidane.

Nor does it mean that me savage or zidane have more right to an opinion than anyone else.

I have 3 friends who played in sticks for professional clubs as teenagers.... none of their opinions stand out any different to another watching fan as to what constitutes a good save or bad save.  Egotistical nonsense to suggest otherwise.  You get insights as to what it's like as a keeper - there isn'tt some magic fuckin circle where being a keeper makes you know more about who looks a good keeper vs someone else.

I wouldn't say that Pete Redknapp Souness Cahill were all critical of him before today's game, and pretty much repeating what's been said on here although the language wasn't as colourful.

I'm not saying you can't have an opinion, I'm saying that goal keepers, especially in modern football, will have a much better insight. For example they will be able to say about the flight of the ball whether he should be punching or catching better than I can as they've experienced it.

Playing the game does give you insight. I’m not saying it makes for opinion more valid.... but it does give you an insight into situations that never playing won’t.

Experience of course give more insight, and thus an opinion more valid. We all live on the planet, doesn’t mean we have more insight than scientists on climate change...

I would trust a person who has watched 1000 ganes of football vs someone who hasn't watched as much football but played a bit of schoolyard footy/amateur footy and watched far less.

The phrase "student of the game".... Bill Belichick one of the greatest NFL coaches ever never played the game.... he just studied it from a young age.

As it happens pickford had a shot pinged at him yesterday- closer range, more dip and swerve and he pushed it over.... clearly his choice last week in dealing with the second goal was wrong and that was reflected in what he did yesterday.

Of course there will always be exceptions. We all know that one guy that smokes like a chimney all his life, and lives to 101.

But smoking is still bad for you.

Just as there will be exceptional students of the game. But generally if we’re talking about people on the same level ( amateur footballer, ameteur fan, or exceptional both) the player will generally have more knowledge on nuances of the game.

But agreed, there are exceptions.

Bloody hell, I’m not even in this argument haha.

Its experience of situations. I never mentioned anything about management. Tactics, formations, philosophies can all be built without playing the game but in a situation where player x does something, player y is highly unlikely to know how to react without prior experience. Its near enough a fact of life. Some people can intuitively get through a situation. For example if Ronaldo runs at me 100 times in a 1 v 1. If I tackle him in the first 10 goes its going to be fortunate, but in them last 10 goes I would have seen 90 other attempts to base my decisions upon and therefore my experience of those 90 goes would give me a better chance of making that tackle. Do you deny that?

Yesterday pickford dealt with a shot harder more dipping than the one you are excusing..... it wasn't technique... It was a decision he pushed it over.  He made the wrong decision for the second goal he palmed it.... no doubt about it.

The heights were a lot different. One was rising the other wasnt. Check the replays.

Edit: I say that presuming we are talking about the shot!

I still feel uneasy when across comes into his area that he is going to deal with them, he very rarely tries to catch it and always seems to opt for a two fisted punch when catching would seem like the easiest and safest thing to do.

I don't know if it's a confidence thing but it is definitely unnerving to watch and scares the shit out of me.

The punching thing has been around for 20+ years now, and I’ve rarely thought it was a good option. So many crosses, and shots for that matter, should just be caught rather that punching or palming away

Guess the counter argument to that is the fact that modern balls move around in the air much more than the old pig's bladder did so it's more difficult to judge the exact flight than it used to be; and if you misjudge a catch you're likely to drop it at a striker's foot, if you misjudge a punch you're still likely to get some distance on it.

Haf, Bailey, your arguing for the sake of it now.

He made a mistake against Newcastle. A very bad call from him.

Against Chelsea, he has a very similar incident, and he made a better decision.

Yes it shows his decision making needs work, but Chelsea also showed that maybe he is working on said decision making.

Another young lad that needs to learn his trade, be it technique, ability, attitude or ego.

Let the children play! They will get bruises, make mistakes and get shouted at. But the characters will come through better for it.
