Wayne Rooney

This anagram crap is pretty irritating, so, back to wary noon eye. Here's an upbeat piece from Ian Darke.

(Btw, what's Darke's reputation as an announcer over your way? Answer with an anagram, if you must.)

Ian is an honorary American to me. He called USMNT games for ESPN for 5+ years and is a recognized voice by all Yank "soccer" fans. Love him.

the increased press is insane. i didn't realize how popular he was. top of espnfc headlines "Rooney nets stunner for Everton" with a link to the video. for a preseason match in africa

moshiri knows what he's doing, even if he doesn't pull up trees on the pitch, the press and marketing will net the club plenty of money/advancement.

I know you have a bit of a 'man thing' for Moshiri, and I don't really blame you, but I'm pretty sure that Koeman who wanted Rooney!!!

credit due to koeman too (man crush on him as well, from a football perspective). good point newts.

Haha. Man crushes all over at the moment!

So many are playing a part in what will hopefully be a turning point for the good for the club rather than a disaster (sorry, but a small part of me can't stop thinking about Leeds United!!!).

Koeman has been massive, it seems, in attracting players due to being a big name player himself back in the day.

I am really not happy about him coming back, IMO its for the wrong reasons .....plus I still bitter about the badge kissing stuff, its going to take a lot to get me on his side, get the winner in the derby at anfield type of deal probably do it.. get us in a cup Final with a late winner fairytale stuff otherwise NAH, plus who goes back to a club after 13 years.......strikers dont even last that long and he carries a bit of extra weight to....he better deliver in goals big time

Rooney leaving us was the single worst thing I have ever experienced as an Everton fan. I remember feeling physically sick - at that point he looked like he could have been the greatest ever, he was one of ours and he left at 18, it just underlined to me how fucking unfair and bullshit the football industry could be.

For me he never came close to living up to his potential, especially in international football. being the all-time record England goalscorer will never disguise how poor he was in tournaments after Euro 2004.

Am I happy to have him back? Of course I bloody am. There hasn't been any time in the last 13 years when I wouldn't have wanted him back. Yes, I don't think he became the world beater he should have been, but he has still been up their in the world class bracket, and has a medal collection to prove it. And yes, he's 31 and his best days are behind him. He might not even be our best player on the pitch next season.

But what really excites me about what is going on at the club at the moment is that Moshiri seems to have a very clear long term plan. Off the pitch, he's doing the right things to turn us into a serious footballing brand again. On it, we're investing massively in youth, which will give us a strong business (through future transfers) and footballing platform.

I am absolutely certain Rooney will have a massive role to play in both. In commercial terms, we've just signed one of the genuine superstars of the world game. Rooney just wearing an Everton shirt makes us massively more marketable. On the pitch, we're signing a role model for the younger players, someone who knows how to win the league, the cups, the Europa and Champions League. What young player wouldn't get a buzz out of playing alongside someone like him? It will give everyone a lift, and I think he has actually matured into a pretty good captain and leader (just not for England!).

Finally, I think he comes here with a point to prove. Everyone has written him off, said he's not good enough at the top level anymore. Maybe they're right, but this is Roy of the Rovers stuff for him. He's a passionate guy anyway, you know he will be giving his absolute all to come back and lead us to glory. Having a player of his calibre, with his experience, fired up and motivated the way he will be - what could possibly go wrong lol!

I dont entirely agree but its a good post.. well done that man

Mate the publicity he's brought alone makes it worth while- our names everywhere, City are about to pay 50 mil for Walker from Tottenham and Sky are running Rooneys goal yesterday as main headline over it.

It's about raising the profile of the club, making us more attractive to investors, sponsors, fans globally and most importantly players- Rooney puts us in a completely different league now. Yes he kissed the badge, he was a young lad and made mistakes but one things for sure- he never forgot us. Look at Fowler, Mcmannum, Carrager, Owen they were all blues every one of them and they are all Kopites now. Rooneys kids have season tickets at Everton and are mad Everton fans. He left for his career but he always had us in his heart. Move on and enjoy it.

Said it before and i'll say it again. His transfer was a commercial decision that just happened to strengthen all parties.

That said, I still think Rooney can perform at the top level. He has become a victim of his own success.

Rooney can operate all over the front 3 and can drop into midfield when required. But his absolute best position is centre forward. He didn't become an all time goal scorer from centre midfield. If we play him as a striker or just behind a mobile striker (Sandro???) then I'm confident he will score at least 15 goals this season.

I said to my mate last night I think over all competitions he will bag 20. I'm confident on that. He has a lot to prove to everyone, probably himself included.

Yup. You have to understand that Rooney is absolutely massive in the eyes of foreign fans. He is instantly recognisable. Some fans support players rather than teams. I was never really into NHL hockey as a kid but I got into it because of Mario Lemieux. So now I have a soft spot for Pittsburgh Penguins. If he had moved to Edmonton Oilers I would have kept an eye on them instead.

For fans that have no emotional connection to the club they are drawn by the players they admire. Wayne Rooney has a massive following all over the world, on top of that he can still put a shift in too.

This is true. It's happened to us in recent years with the American fans following because of Tim Howard.

Strangely, though I'm sure it helped keep me a supporter, Howard and Donovan had nothing to do with my starting to watch Everton. Only realized they were American after I had decided to support Everton pretty arbitrarily.

Likewise. Finding out Howard was American after I started following only strengthened the bond but wasn't a deciding factor.
