rubecula
I will try to, the weather looks a bit wet. but at least I am not stuck in a trench and being shot at (it is an important day for me)
holystove
As soon as my kids are old enough to understand what happened, I will visit Flanders Fields with them. Incredibly important to keep remembering and honouring those that lost their lives, even though it is now 100 years ago. I read somewhere that it is 75 years now since an army last crossed the Rhine, blowing away second longest period which was 3 months. Hafnia
I struggle to grasp the enormity of it. It seems like something that would happen in another world. Human beings getting slaughtered like cattle. I can't get my head around it. A very small footnote.... what does Tony Blair think he's doing going? War criminal who should tried at the Hague and hanged. As for all the poor people impacted by all wars... lest we forget.
rubecula
I am sitting here in bit just now, I am missing my parents and grandparents and a lot of family that are now gone. I know I am an idiot but I can't help myself Palfy

Popular Post johnh
I had three uncles, all Scousers who served in WW1. One served in the Navy, joined when he was 18. Told us a story about when he was joining his ship, which was at sea. He was dropped on an uninhabited island where stores were kept. He was told to wait for his ship which was due to come for supplies. He was warned that sometimes German ships came to steal supplies and to look out for himself. He was alone for a week until his ship came. The other two uncles were in the Army and both were gassed. One died at 50 as a result of problems caused by gassing. I have a copy of a letter my grandfather (who I never knew) wrote to the young sailor uncle when he first joined and was in training. I must admit that my eyes get quite moist when I read it. RIP to everyone who gave their lives in WW1. MikeO, pete0, Romey 1878 and 2 others

I've mentioned him on here before, he survived the war (including Passchendaele) but it completely broke him over the years by all accounts and he died homeless and alcoholic before I was born, grandma brought their kids up on her own. Wish I'd known him, he was called Archie. Hafnia and rubecula

Wish I'd known him, he was called Archie. Mike, the after effects of the war are largely forgotten. One of my uncles who was gassed had a nervous breakdown after the war and spent nearly 30 years in a mental hospital. He was discharged in the 1950's and used to come and stay with us from time to time. He was my mother's brother. Lovely gentle man whose life was ruined by the war. EFC-Paul
Heartbreaking the devastation and ruin it all caused on so many levels Brave men women and kids some of whom joined up under age to fight for a just cause I couldn't even imagine putting myself in their shoes, the bravest generations to have lived in my eyes rubecula and Sibdane

MikeO
Just a thought, I met my wife about 200 yards away from where Harry Patch, last surviving British WW1 soldier died. Drive past that nursing home many times (as well as the place I met the wife although that's long been demolished) to this day and always think of the two events, though obviously they have no connection. rubecula
