To be fair Nyarko cosy £4.5m vs £45m for Gylfi.

It's unfair to tag Gylfi with the Nyarko shout because he has given us some great moments.

However.... with £45m to spend on a player at the time....  when we had Barkley just left - and with better management could have retained him. We essentially lost a £30m player for £20m loss and overpaid on his replacement by £20m......

It’s unfair to pin a price tag to a player who didn’t set the price himself. Plus, the market has changed drastically since Nyarko.

No way. We'll get smoked with a pairing of Gomes and Siggy. Who is going to cover more than a few feet of ground and actually put a legitimate tackle in? I don't want Siggy to start but if he does it has to be off the left in that creative role.

I agree about the CM pair. I think it will have to be Delph because Davies won't be able to deal with Utd counters or the power of Matic. At least Delph will chop him down.

On the left it surely has to be Bernard and probably Iwobi on the other.

Not blaming the player for the price.  I wasn't comfortable with it at the time, but hoped he would show his Swansea form.

I'm frustrated that he hides, been a huge disappointment overall.

He is the same player he was at Swansea for me. His stats and the type of goals he scored glossed over his actual contribution to the game.

We just bought a player that didn't fit into the style of football we wanted to play. Now we are shoehorning him into a limited central midfield role that he isn't good enough to play.

We have certainly bought a lot worse players than him, but we probably didn't waste anywhere near as much money on them.

He was bought as a set piece specialist by Koeman but Walsh failed to bring in a target man to get the best out of him. Then Silva forced him into a role that really didn't fit, he's not fast enough to press and creativity wise he created no more chances in open play than Barry did for us.

I think Sidibé plays better with Walcott ahead of him, so would have them two working the right side. If we approach the game correctly we could cause Utd a lot of problems, but you never really know what you're going to get with Everton.

 Pickford

Sidibé Mina Holgate Digne

Walcott Gomes Delph Bernard

   DC-L  Richarlison

It's a weird thing to buy though isn't it, especially at the price.

Not like we were short of players who can take a free kick and why buy a player just 10-15 or so moments a game.

I have no idea what our scouts were smoking at that time.

Shocking on all parts. With hindsight it was an early warning sign Walsh and Koeman were never gonna work. The price just makes the sting hurt a little more.

Scouting wise the lack of pace was really worrying. Of the main signings only Bolasie and Gana were quick off the mark. The rest being Williams, Keane, Schneiderlin, Rooney, Klaassen, Sigurdssen and Sandro.

Looking at the starting eleven the only improvements were Pickford and arguably Williams which says a lot.

I think with Gylfi as the team improves he personally can’t, it’s like he’s reached his limits and there’s nothing left to give.
Was he ever a great player I’m not convinced he was, great or good players adapt to what’s happening around them and with in themselves, he doesn’t have the ability or the imagination in his game to do that.
As I’ve said before he has to go down as the most expensive mistake this club as ever made.

Watched giroud for Chelsea yesterday and you sounded what could have been if he was on the end of some of them set pieces

                          Pickford

coleman         Holgate.  Mina.     Digne

              Gilfi.        Delph.     Gomes

              Charly.     DCl.        Bernie

variation of 4-4-2 when we haven’t got the ball. Bernie drops into left position and Gilfi on right side. Or swap Gilfi for iwobi

To win this we need to take our chances, we will get them we need to convert them, we lost to Arsenal for this reason.
And that’s the difference with playing the better teams if you don’t punish them with your chances they will come back to hurt you, because they will make the most of theirs.

Why not just start with Bernie in a straight 442 formation,  Gylfi and Coleman together on the right isn’t what I would want to see to be honest, if Walcott is fit put him there if not then I would say Sidibe.
We need some pace in our defending against Utd and I can’t see that coming from Gylfi and Coleman together, they would get slaughtered on the break and Utd like to play on the break.

I would like this , but think Carlo will start with Delph in midfield. Hey ho. Most important thing is the 3 points, although a good performance is a close second!!

I like this, except for Siggy!!

Carlo still checking on players and partnerships which makes sense.

Wish I could be there or watch it but have re-arranged family lunch to go to :cryingsmiley:

Hopefully in a pub with a sky sports on!
