Corona Virus

We haven’t really spoken about Corona Virus on the forum, yet it has become the biggest story pretty much around the world, it is now in one of the nearest towns to me Swindon.
I was wondering what people’s thoughts were, and concerns if any.

Personally never been a fan of Mexican beer.

Oh wait a minute I see what you're talking about now. I am a bit concerned as both wife and I have dodgy immune systems but there's sweet FA I can do about it really so just have to see how it develops. In all honesty on a personal level the thing that worries me most is the possibility of travel restrictions coming in and putting my three weeks in Greece later in the year in jeopardy.

Not playing down the very sad fact that a load of people have died and lots more are going to but we've got through bird flu, SARS and ebola scares in recent times so I'm sure the human race will get through this; if it's without me the World will be a sadder place.

I'm in the same boat as you. I have a trip to Iceland planned in late April, and I'm worried I won't be able to go.

i'm not worried about it i live in the midwest and it hasn't gotten here yet, mostly the coasts.  i'd be worried for my children but it targets mostly older people and doesn't seem to be effecting children much, which is a good thing.  as far as me?  well i'm all paid up on my life insurance so my wife and kids will have a nice life :)  i'm not worried, i'm not traveling abroad, just skiing trips a few hours away which won't be hampered.

But you’re right Mark it’s the elderly and people who are already sick and weak who will suffer most, a bit like what the common strains of flu already do.

So on that basis I’m not going out for a few weeks, I’m going to send the wife out for everything she’s a few more years younger, so stands a greater chance of fighting it, I haven’t told her yet if no one here’s from me for a while it didn’t go down to well 😂

Was supposed to be going to Rome next weekend to watch the rugby but that’s off. Had our first reported death in the region, it really does seem to attack the older folks hard. Just keep covering your mouths and washing your hands everyone

Living in NYC, I'm shocked it took so long to get here. I figured we would be one of the first major metropolitan areas to get hit. I'm usually pretty blasé about sanitizing hands or anything, but I've been washing them like crazy and avoiding touching anything.

Just saw that the Prem is temporarily banning any handshakes before matches due to the virus, which begs the question.....is there a possibility the season gets delayed/called off? I can't imagine it would come to that, as it looks like Italy's way to handle it is just have all matches played behind closed doors. But wouldn't it be something if the year the shite are about to win the league, an act of *whoever/whatever* prevents it from happening?

All then pharmacies and shops are out of stock for masks and hand sanitizer with no idea when they’ll restock! It’s full panic mode over here.

Because people are idiots and instead of buying what they actually need they buy way too much. Same as the people who lose their minds when the shops close for one day over Christmas and they buy as if they need to fill a bunker.

Have you noticed the amount of adds we are getting on this thread for masks, it’s become a huge business opportunity for some, we will be getting undertakers in the next couple of weeks if things do get any worse.
Oh well one mans loss is another mans gain😷

I have no idea why but in Australia it's toilet paper.

All schools in Dubai now closed for 4 weeks as a protective measure against coronavirus. Restrictions in place on which counties citizens can travel to and restrictions on passengers who enter Dubai/UAE from certain countries - and that list is growing.

Its bizarre, I am yet to find a reason why people think toilet paper will be in short supply.

At risk of opening up an entire second front of discussion on this thread, I have over my years as an expat 'migrated' from using toilet paper to using the bidet hose pipe, kindly installed alongside most bogs in this part of the world.

I wouldn't have it any other way now. Cleaner, fresher, cheaper and better for the planet!

My old man did the same after visiting Indonesia, have to say I also prefer it.

Trump seems to think he can stop the virus by denying it's an issue.

Bizarre and irresponsible carry on, Republicans can get it too.

What is and has an average American got that others haven’t, obviously an immunity to viruses by the sounds of it.

I went to our mini Supermarket the other day.  One of the things on our shopping list was toilet rolls.  I got a pack of 9 and got a load of comments about panic buying. We just needed them!

One for each toilet 🚽 in mansion John can’t see the problem 😉

Why do so many plagues seem to originate in China? Even the Black Death originated in China and, ironically, swung into Europe via Italy.

They still have regular outbreaks of plague in China to this day.

It's a country with an insanely crammed population who in some cases are forced to live in appalling conditions. Despite being a rich economy and advanced in many ways, the level of hygiene is not something that you would find relatable in the UK or US.

A lot of communities still deal with sickness with more traditional methods too as opposed to turning to medicine, so diseases can last for longer untreated and manifest into the likes of SARS, bird flu and coronavirus.

Where you have an overcrowding population, you'll always have rampant disease as a side effect.

They're all wrong about coronavirus. Trump, like our government here, is trying to keep the hype down to protect the economy from taking a nose dive. Sections of the opposition are chearing it on hoping that an economic collapse brings about the end of Trump. People need to put their partisanship aside as we are talking about people dying from an infectious disease.

Look at Italy now, have you heard the transcripts of the doctors? They're getting people in their 40s coming in and needing a ventilator, they're having to make decisions on who gets to go on a ventilator (over 60s might not get one).

People in S. Korea and Japan who were thought to be recovered are coming back with reinfections. The number of recovered cases is really low too.

We will know more in 2 weeks as it takes that long to incubate. I don't think people in USA and UK will self-isolate because our societies have collapsed and nobody cares about each other.

Who is all wrong?

Your post, after saying saying Trump is just trying to protect the economy actually highlights why his tweets are so irresponsible. Let's keep in mind he has the absolute best reporting and intelligence supplying him information and he's still showing zero understanding of the situation.

One thing is sure, we're having a global recession and this is going to get much worse before it gets better.

I think most rely on traditional medicines and treatment because they can’t afford western medicines.

Just announced over here in the states that the NCAA men's and women's basketball tournament games will all be played in empty arenas. March Madness is a big deal (and money-maker), and I feel like this is just the beginning to the inevitable reality of all sporting events being played to empty stadia.

For me the pretence to carry on sporting events globally is just daft if you don't have a crowd; sport at the highest level (actually also down to the lowest) is about people watching, "behind closed doors" is just plain daft and defeats what it's about. Postpone the games and either wait until things are under control or write the season off; all sports all countries.

It's only sport after all; we all invest a lot of time/money to it but we're getting to life/death which is a little more important.

Fully agree with you there, Mike.

We'll never hear the end of it if this Prem season is called off and the shite miss out on the title

Very idealistic Michael, majority of money comes from the TV so think the show will go on regardless.

Sam Harris has put out two very informative podcasts in the last 48 hours, listened to them both last night in a bout of insomnia. The latter had some positive news based on the country with the best testing (South Korea, they have drive through testing) the death rate is only 0.6% (6 times worse than the most recent bad flu case)

Nicholas A. Christakis, MD, PhD, MPH, is the Sterling Professor of Social and Natural Science at Yale University, where he directs the Human Nature Lab and is the Co-Director of the Yale Institute for Network Science.

A juventus striker has tested positive for corona virus.

I don't know if there is another statement from Juve but they have released a statement for their defender, Rugani not a striker. Well, at least for now. Italy also going to close all restaurants, pubs, markets etc. except hospitals and pharmacies.

Rest of the NBA season has been postponed and a Utah Jazz player tested positive as well. (No name mentioned yet)

On the other hand Tom Hanks said he and his wife (or just girlfriend?) are tested positive.

Things are getting serious.

It’s expected that a government decree will be announced today or tomorrow that all sports will be played behind closed doors.
That’s a shame for the shite and there supporters just when after last night they must have been thinking things can’t  get any worse.

They'll still win the league, so I don't see why they'd give a shit. As long as the season plays out they'll be happy.

Considering the flights from Norway are probably cut off, I imagine most would’ve been watching on TV anyway. Plus, couldn’t care less, they’re going to gloat and brag regardless

Just moving dad to his new apartment for when he’s in Basel. He’s got a flight back to Liverpool on Friday, just hoping the borders stay open long enough!
