Johnsy Posted September 21, 2020 Report Posted September 21, 2020 With the new handball rule & VAR we've already seen lots of penalties this season - hopefully then it won't take until the end of the season for us to get our first again, but I still wouldn't be surprised! Anyway, assuming we do actually get our fair share this time, with Baines gone & Gylfi a bench player now, who do we think is going to take them? Richarlison? James? Or just keep with the left back taking them & give them to Digne? Quote
StevO Posted September 21, 2020 Report Posted September 21, 2020 I’d say Gylfi if he’s on the pitch. Digne if he’s not. But I’d like to see Richarlison or DCL step up, if they are good enough, and add some more goals to their tally. Matt 1 Quote
duncanmckenzieismagic Posted September 21, 2020 Report Posted September 21, 2020 I don’t think it matters, we never get them anyway! Quote

Vranny Posted September 21, 2020 Report Posted September 21, 2020 I was guessing it might be James myself. He used to be a regular taker before he started playing with the likes of Ronaldo and Lewandowski. Quote
pete0 Posted September 22, 2020 Report Posted September 22, 2020 Digne, follow the path of Baines and Unsworth. Quote
markjazzbassist Posted September 22, 2020 Report Posted September 22, 2020 digne, james, gylfi. i bet james is smooth as silk Quote
FairWooney Posted September 22, 2020 Report Posted September 22, 2020 I'd imagine James can strike a pen. I'd also like to see DCL and Richarilson backed to take them if they are competent (and they really should be) though. If DCL wants to compete for top goal scorer he should be able to take pens if he can show he's capable of scoring 9 out of 10. RuffRob 1 Quote
Bailey Posted September 22, 2020 Report Posted September 22, 2020 Surely it will be James but if not then I think Digne would be a good shout. I would imagine Allan would have the mentality for it too. I haven't been impressed by Gyfli's penalties. Quote
Aidan Posted September 22, 2020 Report Posted September 22, 2020 I've seen James take a couple on highlights that's it. I've can't recall Digne taking one, so I'm not sure who the best would be although if I had to hazard a guess it would be Digne. Preferably if Dom keeps scoring I'd like to see him get his fair share if he is comfortable taking them. Quote
StevO Posted September 22, 2020 Report Posted September 22, 2020 I fancy Digne on penalties because he strikes the ball very very clean, and he seems very relaxed and calm. Not because we have a tradition of left backs taking penalties or anything like that. It would have no bearing on it. Matt 1 Quote

Generally, I think players that can take free kicks are also likely to be good when they step up to take penalties. It isn't always the case but if you can take a free kick you have the technical ability to take pen. The technical ability is also why I wouldn't fancy DCL for it. StevO 1 Quote
markjazzbassist Posted September 23, 2020 Report Posted September 23, 2020 i can't believe i'm reading DCL for penalties. hell no for me, he's not a clinical finisher and if you've ever watched the shooting challenges he's awful. Bailey 1 Quote

You’ve kicked a football before right Mark? So you know kicking a dead ball and a shooting challenge are not the same thing? If he can strike a dead ball into the back of the net that’s all that matters with a penalty. And most of the problem with a penalty is in the head, not the feet. Zoo 2.0 1 Quote

Absolutely this, I wouldn't want him taking our penalties in case of a counter attack, but if you want to see a confident penalty look no further than Jordan Pickford against Switzerland. If we were ever in a shootout scenario then I'd back Jordan all the way as one of our five. Within the 90, I'd go for Digne, DCL or James. All of them are bursting with confidence and take their set-pieces/shots with really good technique. With all of the above said and not to sound like one of those numpties you see in social media, anyone who is a footballer as a profession and gets paid £50,000+ a week should be able to score from 12 yards with a dead ball. Whilst I agree that a lot of it is mental, more technical players are going to find the corner more often than less technical players. markjazzbassist 1 Quote

Completely agree too. I think the players mentioned in this thread are all technically good enough when it comes to striking a dead ball. I wouldn’t expect a player like Mina to be stepping up. Matt Posted September 26, 2020 Report Posted September 26, 2020 I imagine we’ll rotate, will make it harder for the opposition keepers to know what to expect. Wiggytop and pete0 2 Quote

Possibly, although Richarlison strikes me as the kind of player that is bothered about his numbers. Whether or or not the rest of the team will be happy with that will remain to be seen. pete0 Posted September 26, 2020 Report Posted September 26, 2020 Not a fan of how Richarlison took his pen, the staggered run bollocks because if the keeper doesn't move you make the pen harde score. Elston Gunnn 1 Quote

RuffRob Posted September 27, 2020 Report Posted September 27, 2020 Given the amount of penalties that seem to be being given this season - being the pen taker its going to have a massive impact on who wins the golden boot this season. Vardy had two more pens today (could have been three only he had be subbed!!)- this puts him at joint Prem top scorer with DCL on 5 goals - However 4 of Vardy where pens!! Quote
