Lots slating Coleman, but is he really that bad? Honestly think he lives the club and does his best. Might not be the hard bastard captain some want, but he is inspirational to a lot of young players.

Funny…. That clip above is Coleman 5 years ago.

If Seamus Coleman was the same Seamus Coleman as 5 years ago then he would be lying on a sofa with his leg in plaster.

for all intents and purposes he’s been way past his best for a long time now.

Not saying he isn’t past his best. Any player that plays with intensity for so long and suffers those injury’s will be.

But he is still a great servant to the club. He seems to get blamed because managers pick him.

The lad gets picked, plays and tries his best. The most senior player in the squad.

We have also had a series of managers that have selected him as captain.

There is clearly something in him that they see day in day out that they like rather than the 90mins we see every few days.

As for Patterson I didn't see the game, but a lot of average players can look good in international games. Im not saying he is average, just making the point. Poland are a decent side but the game would be nowhere near PL level.

I am very surprised that he hasn't seen more time on the pitch, even coming off the bench to bring a fresh injection to the team. There is something about him that the management dont like at the moment but hopefully that will change as its not like our other options in those positions are undroppable.

I don’t have a problem with the career Seamus has had.  Been a solid player for us.

let’s be honest though, he should have hung up his boots a while ago. He is getting rinsed far more regularly than Gary Neville was when he looked at it and said “no, I’m costing my team”.

the fact he is still playing is an indictment on our recruitment really.

his supposed leadership isn’t what’ve we or most team needs.  He is a text book pro, that doesn’t make you a leader.  I still retain, his ear cupping to fans and arguing with them when we started to see the shit on the pitch bothers me.

The fact he had been selected as a captain doesn’t mean anything really, it more than likely supports the fact that we have a collective bunch of shithouses and he’s the one with the most leadership.  If Gordon had another year under his belt he would be skipper, in fact for me he is the captain.?

let’s face it, that’s probably the only reason Coleman is getting selected cos his defensive work has been shit. His passing has been arguably the worst in the team.

he’s gonna have the odd game where he proves the doubters wrong but for me the fact that he’s our leader indicates why we lack leadership.

bringin Patterson in is a big gamble, if we were safe I would be playing him all the time and I’m sure lampard would. He clearly may not be up to it defensively and the potential of him making a mistake that costs us could wreck him.

I think it does mean something. It means they think he is the best man for the job.

I wouldn't have Gordon anywhere captain. Being captain isn't about working hardest on the pitch. That is the captain you want because it is what you see. The role a club captain plays off the pitch is a far bigger job than what they do in 90 minutes.

Seamus is clearly doing a great job…. What on earth am I thinking.  Yes, we know what makes a good club captain don’t we…. You can be an amazing club captain and actually have no real influence on the pitch.

Alan Ball was the same age as Gordon and barked at nobby stiles to “run you bastard” in the World Cup final…. Whilst covering every blade of grass. Why isn’t Gordon ready for captaincy? What is it that Coleman does that he can’t do?

Alan Ball wasn’t the captain that day but he was every inch a captain in every game he played.  Gordon has the same drive and energy, a young ginger live wire who wants to win and will run his balls off and tell elder pros to do the same.

let’s be clear here, the only reason that Coleman is in either side is because both sides are very very poor and in the case of Everton he is one of only a few players who don’t look like they aren’t arsed - despite not being worth a shirt.  His retaining of captaincy is purely out of respecf for the player and pro he has been…. Not for what he gives us on the pitch.

Seamus Coleman led his national team to a home draw against Belgium. He's still a player and captain of immense value, so it's rather unfair to be panning him. On the other hand, it's clear we need to transition a new player to his position, which means phasing Nathan Patterson into the team. That must be done in a careful way, though, given the precarious position we're facing in the league,

From your comments on the Belgium game I can only assume you never saw any of it, Coleman was completely done for their first goal and had a deflection for an own goal for their second, Belgium completely dominated the game from beginning till the end with pretty much a reserve team. I think it’s fair to say most on here recognise his contribution to the team in the past, but this season he hasn’t been anywhere near good enough and deserves the criticism that’s come his way.

That was a long way to say very little.

I agree that he is captain based on his off the pitch actions. In an ideal world he shouldn't be on the teamsheet anymore except as cover but thats not where we are at the moment shockingly.

Its not just up to Coleman to stand up and be counted on the pitch. That should be every player, captains armband or not and I don't get why you are so obsessed with that.

A long way to say very little? Pot kettle ffs. You seen your posts??!

I’m not obsessed with that, I’m perplexed that people think he is a good captain - how can you be a good captain and make so many fundamental mistakes? How can you concede possession at a greater rate than the players you are supposed to be leading?

he is finished and should not be playing. Simple as that.

Hahaha I cant disagree with your first line! At least I can acknowledge it!

Again I repeat, he shouldn't be first choice on the pitch, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't be club captain.

I dunno...  in my opinion if you walk round a hospital wearing a surgeons scrubs you better know what to do if someone collapses in front of you.

I can’t believe this.

We need to find a solution for right back urgently, neither Kenny or Coleman are technically good enough footballers - especially as they are not athletic enough.

Mykolenko did okay last game - showed lots of energy to get up and down.

And hopefully they can get rid of Kenny and sort out this right back wearing number three nonsense. We all know that’s the most important thing (to me)!

Kenny is gone and so the first part of your wish has been granted.  Just need to see the number assignments.

It’ll be interesting to see how this works out. Our RB are now a near retirement Seamus and a 20 year old coming off a surgery. Presumably Holgate or Godfrey can slide over if need be but it does seem like Patterson is going to have to learn on the job

This is what I worry about a little bit.

I feel that there is still a good chance that Coleman starts the season.

First half of the season 100% but I believe Frank will drop him as soon as he has a couple of poor games.

I'm not sure how JJK would have improved the situation but someone at the club thought he was needed.

I don’t think it’s a matter of dropping him for performance. The plan has to be for Patterson to take over. He just has to show he’s good enough to do that at some point. Probably gonna get his chance sooner than expected if we don’t bring in another RB.

I don’t have to much of a problem with Patterson I think he would fit well into a Lampard team based on good possession with an attacking mentality, he’s a young lad with a great first touch and an ability to keep possession in a tight spaces, I have a lot of belief in him he could be a great asset for us.

I think he will and then you play Patterson in spots and hope he takes off. We were really spoiled when Digne came in and rather seamlessly replaced Baines.

You would think this would have been the plan, but then I wonder why they offered JJK a new contract in the first place?

I don't see Coleman being able to play a big part in our season so we need to really hope that Patterson does come in and hit the ground running when he is given the chance.

Yes I think he’s certainly got a high ceiling. The issue, of course, is that he’s 20 and making a big step up in competition. The plan was likely to have Kenny (an OK option) as insurance as Seamus winds down his career and Patterson develops. Now I’d imagine you might see some of Holgate or Godfrey over there If need be.

Hopefully he has an old head on young shoulders, I don’t think he will lack the confidence and he’s got the ability now it’s down to Lampard and his back room boy’s to coach him into the system.

This is a multi-capped Scottish international we're talking about. He should need no period of bedding in: I'm sure he's just raring to go.

Seen that Scottish team? 😂

Dont forget he wasn’t even first choice at Rangers. I expect he will be our first choice soon enough though.

You're becoming a bit of a misery guts in your old age. :) Is this what the past season did to you? If so, a lot is riding on our preseason.

Haha just a big dose of realism from 38 years of Everton abuse. 😂

I expect the lad to be a very good player, but not because he’s been first choice for a shit Scotland team and not because he wasn’t first choice for Rangers. I don’t think it’ll be a smooth start, but I have faith in Seamus to help him get into it.
Wouldn’t surprise me to see our defence set up like Jose’s early Chelsea teams, with one full back attacking and one defending, with Patterson being the attacker and Mykolenko being the defender, like Cole and Perrera (spelling?).

What if Coleman suddenly rediscovers his form? It's definitely form and injury dependent.

We've got 2 RB on paper. There's a lot of what ifs we could throw out there but as it stands we've got that position covered.

From what I see of Coleman it isn't form related, its more his body and what he can cope with week in week out and even across the 90 minutes.

He is a player that has got to where he is with his energy, speed and almost blind ignorance to just keep going regardless and not worry about what might go wrong. His speed is going (especially the longer/more he plays), his energy has gone and his age is catching up with him in that he is doubting himself and losing that fearless edge he had.

In my opinion they are all the hallmarks of an older player coming to the end of their career where the body can't do what it used to and the mind is starting to second guess what he is or isn't still capable of. Whilst I think he is capable of stepping in and doing a job here and there, I would confidently predict that he would make a lot of mistakes if he played week in week out for another season. That probably means he will end up being player of the season :P
