As football authorities make tackling homophobia a priority, why are there no openly homosexual players? Cisse's comments, which were probably meant as light-hearted fun, suggest there is some way to go before gay players feel sufficiently comfortable to come out. Alan Smith, who managed Crystal Palace and Wycombe Wanderers said "You can get drunk and beat up your wife and that's quite acceptable, but if someone were to say 'I'm gay', it's considered awful. Seriously - hitting a woman is out of order, hitting a pregnant woman (slightly more defenseless) is bang out of order and he should have got more than a caution. The fact that his wife felt the need to call the police and have him arrested tells its own story. the guy is a complete wanker and is obviously out of control.
