Everton Scouts

Interesting read in Martin Tyler's blog on the Sky Sports website. He mentions a former Man City player Tony Henry being in a "Frank Arnersen" role at the club.

After a google I found that he is also an agent/scout and once tried to sign Christiano Ronaldo for Liverpool for £4million, a week later he was at Man Utd for £12million.

Apparently our head scout is a guy called Robbie Cooke. So at the very least we have three people at the Euros all scouting for Everton (Moyes is other one).

Robbie Cooke

Born: Rotherham

Dob: 16th February 1957

Position: Head Scout

Tony Henry

Born: Newcastle

Dob: 26th November 1957

Sporting Director/Scout

Now here's some information, about Robbie Cooke, to put things into perspective for you.

Ex-player Robbie Cooke played for Millwall, Peterborough, Cambridge and Kettering. When I moved down to East Anglia in the 1990s he had finished his playing career and was working for Thomas Cook in Peterborough. He was co-managing a team, Warboys, in a local league. Subsequently, he moved to Kettering as assistant manager before joining Moyes as Cheif Scout at Everton.

Now tell me, what credentials does Robbie Cooke have for scouting top class players? British players, perhaps - but continental players? Come on!

Did he spot Kroldrup maybe?

ManU's (for example) chief scout was Sir Les Kershaw, a chemical scientist who "demonstrated that the observational and logical skills a scientist brings to the laboratory and lecture environment can also be employed in many other fields of endeavour including sport."

It's currently Jim Lawlor, who was a lecturer in Sports Science at Liverpool University, where he worked on a tracking system for use in football matches.

Lots of qualifications there  .

Scouts don't tend to be household names, for one it'd be too expensive to employ them and secondly they'd want a more high profile job than trailing round parks all winter.

  • 2 weeks later...

Here's another scout.

Josef Csaplár

Born :Ostrov nad Ohri

Dob: 29th October 1962

He's a former Czech-based manager who had some success in Czech Republic and Poland. Apparently management is not his strong point but he has an eye for talent.

He's the one who recommended the defender Suchy.
