  1. Even with a "chunk" of the Rodwell money available, I just can't see us being able to afford buying him. Particularly if the rumours that DM is wanting to get numbers in other areas too - which I would agree with.

That said, I'd be cockahoop even if we got him on a season-long loan.

I think he'd have the impact of the fella on my avatar. worship[1].gif

  2. DM doesn't seem the type that keeps up-to-date with the way that the marketing at the club works and talk before the game with the fans and even the players, so he's likely missed out on the spirit it was intended. Looking at him in the interview he does seem genuinely a little pissed off about the invasion.

  3. An odd contradiction against the club by David Moyes after the game:

"I was disappointed the crowd came on the pitch because it would've been great for Tony to have enjoyed the moment actually scoring a goal on the field, but actually in a way it got ruined because too many people came on"

Do you think the club promoting the game as "If Hibbo scores we riot" might have encouraged the pitch invasion, Davie?!?!

  4. I think 5th. This'll depend on a few factors:

    • How we start the season. I assume the rigours of pre-season mean we should expect we won't get off to a flyer again and run the season as a slightly mis-timed marathon again. If we pick up the pace earlier, then...
    • The performance of "transitional" teams: Spurs, Arsenal, Liverpool and, to a lesser extent, Villa.
    • If AVB does anything at Spurs, I don't think it'll be from the off. He talked about Chelsea being a "project", so if his outlook and style is generally long-term then we may be able to capitalise on changes.
    • ...which is the same as Liverpool. Rodgers has his very specific style of play and he'll have equally specific players in mind to fit into that. It takes time.
    • Arsenal have made some good signings, but players Wenger brings in tend to start slowly before they fit in and fire.
    • Villa have a really good new manager too and it's difficult to say how quickly he'll make an impact.

  5. As i stated in the hibbert thread, Rooney has no place in Hibberts testimonal. If he wants to play in a blue shirt again, let him run his contract down and join us as a 29/30 year old on a free transfer.

Anyone who thinks for one minute that his sale wasn't engineered is living in a dreamworld, how could we have kept him? How else would we have raised £20m to stop us going into administration.

I'd liked to have seen it myself. It certainly would raise the profile of the match and the club and to have one of the biggest stars in football playing for us, even just for 90 minutes, may even attract the attention of those looking for football club investment.

The downside, of course, would be it overshadowing the host of the party.

I'm not sure it was engineered by the club, but I think there was much more of a effort into completing the deal than has been revealed. I think it was utterly manipulated by Paul Stretford. I hope the relationship is different now and that Stretford doesn't have an exclusive contract on who Rooney listens to. If he does then the chances of him moving home after seeing out his Man U contract are practically zero.

I do agree that the money from it has saved the club though.

  6. Maybe I should do this: 67.gif but I think it would have been great if this happened.

Life's too short to hold resentment against the lad for this long and he's gone off and done something that he, sadly, would never have done at our club. The "once a blue, always a blue" statement he made, although seemingly questioned through the pursuit of success, is still true.

I get the feeling that Wayne, as he gets older, is thinking beyond the fame, fortune and token things in life and there is an effort underway to appease fellow blues - his appearance at Goodison last season, revealing his son still gets an Everton kit, the talk about Everton that crops up more and more in interviews and, of course, this.

To gain forgiveness for the vast majority of blues, seeing out his contract at United and re-signing for us will likely do it.

    Article from The Guardian:

Wayne Rooney asked to play for Everton in Tony Hibbert's testimonial

    • 'It was a great honour that he wanted to play,' says Hibbert

    • Manchester United friendly stops Rooney from playing

  7. I had never heard of this wonga before, but over here native americans live tax free because of all the terrible things my ancestors and the like did to them. I digress, anyway it reminded me of these native american loansp2cVl.jpg

    Geeee-whiz!!

Wonga is intended as a very short-term loan if you've run a bit short of cash just before pay day. I guess they have to give the annual rate, which as Mike as pointed out, makes for a giggle.

I have never, ever seen a long-term loan with APR of 89% over here. In fact, I think the Financial Services Authority have outlawed them!!

To quality this as "on-topic", do we have any native Americans on the board????????????? 67.gif

  8. Does anybody else find it curious that we've declared how much we've paid for Pienaar?

Do you think it's a bit of a PR exercise to answer any questions over our spending this summer? "We did spend £4.5m on Pienaar you know. And on an unrelated note, thank goodness for Wonga.com!!".

  9. Interesting. Isn't it against FA, UEFA and FIFA rules to resell footy tickets though? I always thought it was, but maybe that has changed.

Although anyone who is able to sell a ticket for Everton vs Southampton (for example) at a profit deserves the extra money they make biggrin.png

You're right, but I'm pretty sure this is only if you make a profit. Tickets can only be sold on at face-value.

I guess for selling on a ticket from a season ticket, then the club and StubHub will set a value it can be sold for.

Wouldn't be surprised if there is a surge in demand for the service when we play them though!!

I wonder how much demand will go up when the game is live on TV??

  10. The "great servant" tag is something given out a bit too freely, but in Tim's case it's certainly appropriate.

I'm sure he'd agree that he's not someone possessed with silky skills or will ever come close to being our best ever player, but that enthusiasm, determination, bravery, love of the club and, perhaps most of all, THAT heading ability should be what we remember him by.

Personally, I think we should hold him in much higher regard than Duncan Ferguson.

To be fair, at his age and the signs that it showing, it's a great deal for the club (particularly wages saved) and think he'll have another 3 or 4 years at the top in MLS.
