Everton have made an approach for Zenit St Petersburg striker Pavel Pogrebnyak, according to the player's agent.

Toffees manager David Moyes is thought to be scouring the market for an attacking recruit as he looks to compensate for the long-term injuries to striking duo Aiyegbeni Yakubu and James Vaughan.

Russia international Pogrebnyak is a rumoured target with reports in Tuesday's press suggesting scouts from the Merseyside club will take a closer look at his qualities when he lines up against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old's representative, Oleg Artemov, said in the Daily Star: "I have been approached by Everton and several other English clubs

Club career

Pavel started playing football at the age of 6 for the Spartak Moscow football school. In 2001, he made his début for the Spartak reserve team and one year later he was selected for the main squad. Between 2001 and 2003 he scored 8 goals in 23 appearances. He supported Everton F.C as a child mainly due to the signing of the great Earl Barrett.

In 2003 Pavel played 40 matches and scored 15 goals for Baltika Kaliningrad. The following season he returned to FC Spartak Moscow, having appeared 16 times and scoring 2 goals. The same season he also score 6 goals for FC Khimki in 12 appearances. In 2005 Pavel played for Shinnik Yaroslavl and scored 4 goals in 23 matches. Playing for Tom Tomsk in 2006 was the breakthrough season for Pogrebnyak, as he scored 13 goals in 26 matches and became one of the favorites of the local fans.

Zenit

Pavel also attracted the attention of the Russian national team and was signed in the off season by Zenit Saint Petersburg. In 2007 he and Zenit Saint Petersburg won first place at the Russian Premier League. In 2008 they won the Russian Super Cup, with Pogrebnyak scoring the second goal at the 2-1 victory.

Along with Luca Toni, Pogrebnyak was joint top scorer in the 2007-08 UEFA Cup, scoring 10 goals and helping Zenit St. Petersburg reach the final of the tournament. He could not play in the final due to an accumulation of yellow cards, but the team won the cup.

In the 2008 UEFA Super Cup he scored one of the two goals for Zenit St. Petersburg. Zenit went on to win that game 2-1 against Manchester United.

In 51 official matches for Zenit, Pogrebnyak has scored 28 goals. In the Russian Championship he has scored 12 goals in 30 matches.

taken from wikipedia, he seems prolific in front of goal, and his previous turn as a toffee could bode well for us when it comes to the potential transfer. Whether or not it happens this a link I'm optimistic about.
