rubecula
How many of you are old enough to remember the muted British Space Plane called HOTOL? Anyway if not look it up the web can give you better details than I can. It has recently resurfaced for the new SKYLON project. Albeit with much modification. Back in the 1980's (I think it was the 1980's it looked very promising until funding dried up (Nasa actually took an interest cos it was said to be much much better than the Shuttle. When they lost interest after perusing the more sensitive information, they pulled out (Oh what a surprise) and hence the lack of forthcoming funds. (Obviously it was a little more complicated than that) But in any case it was such a good idea it has been dragged out of the past to be used for new projects such as Skylon. Anyway if any of this interests you here are a couple of links to get you started. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reaction_Engines_Skylon http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-13520948 And, HOTOL: http://www.flightglobal.com/blogs/aircraft-pictures/2009/02/us-interest-reignited-in-uk-ho.html http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A46904835 There is a lot more info floating about if this sort of stuff interests you. Look it up.
