1. Neill and Cahill in investment link with Aussie A-League club

SYDNEY (AFP) - English-based Socceroos Lucas Neill and Tim Cahill have discussed investment opportunities with Australian A-League club Central Coast Mariners, the club said Saturday.

The A-League's smallest club, just north of Sydney, is struggling at the bottom of the eight-team league this campaign after losing to Sydney FC in last season's inaugural grand final and is looking for financial backers.

Club executive chairman Lyall Gorman said he has met Southeast Asian investors and has had initial talks with Blackburn Rovers' defender Neill and Everton midfielder Cahill, both members of Australia's World Cup squad this year in Germany.

"I read what they said about investing in the A-League, so we had a meeting while they were out here in late July, and we're exploring their interest to see where it might take us," Gorman told the Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday.

"We haven't gone any higher or lower than that. Down the track, if there's a realistic opportunity, we'd be very keen to take it up."

Details of any possible investment were not revealed.

Neill and Cahill, key members of the Australian national team and close friends, are expected to be home again next month for two internationals against Paraguay in Brisbane and an Asian Cup qualifier with Bahrain in Sydney.

  5. Watford do look quite good but sadly playing good football doesn't guarantee safety if you don't have the quality players. If you play good football you allow others to do the same and chances are the opposition will be better at it! For teams to survive they have to battle it out, unless they are resigned to going down and are planning to use the money to go up again next year (this is a fairly good strategy that Charlton used to good affect)

I say Watford, Fulham and Wigan to go down. Keeping faith with the Blades to pull off a dramatic recovery in the second half of the season!

you may be right. altho watford played well against us they are still not winning anything. i'm a bit surprised. maybe their performance against us was exceptional and now they are settling into their natural game and place.

they are fixed at the bottom of the table and altho its early days you dont want to spend too much time down there!

  6. We are doing great at the moment and I'm thrilled but people should slow down and really analyse that we still have a lot of work to do:

    1.  We have no plan B

    2.  We have no natual, dynamic holding player (Carsley is effective but a bit limited)

    3.  We lack pace and width on the wings

    4.  If AJ get's injured, what then?  With Beattie we result to poor long ball football.

    5.  We only have a loanee goal keeper (heaven help us when he returns to Manure)

    6.  We have a very small squad

    7.  Victor A and James V apart, nothing seems to knocking at the door from the academy

We really are getting there but we still need quite a few more players next summer!

Would be more comfortable if Nugent and Appiah came at Christmas!

    50732

every squad in the premiership, except possibly chelski and manu play within their limitations.

no matter who we can afford to buy in the summer we will still have weaknesses, just like every other team.

get used to it. it isnt going to change. its the nature of the sport unless you have an unlimited budget.

  7. Naysmith was wank , hes got no pace, no quality and is a bit of a shithouse IMO. I will give credit to him when he plays well (I thought he played very well against the shite) but the majority of the time hes poor, if we can get someone in Jan for LB then I would see if we could get some money out of him from Celtic.

We are still unbeaten though so bring on the Posh :D

    50543

naysmith isnt as good as valente. he should be a backup not a startup, even tho he had a good game against the reds.

i'm sure moyes wont be happy with the performance of one or two and i hope we'll see changes before the next real match against newcastle.

they had a good away win against west ham so they will be looking for 3 points at home on sunday.

i think we can dissappoint them! B)

we should certainly maintain our unbeaten record.

  8. We always struggle in the league cup , reckon we'll sneak it 1-0 with Victor to score the goal .  :)

    50659

we should win comfortably but lower league teams always seem to pull out all the stops against the big boys.

its a rare opportunity to show them up.

    3 - 0 for us.

  9. liverpoo havent looked good in ANY game this season. they had their chances against chelski but failed to take them.

the finger has to be pointed at benitez.

he keeps changing the side and no-one knows whose going to play and who isnt. he picked a poor team aganst us and until crouch came on at chelski they didnt seem to have any real purpose.

there maybe some advantages in rotating your squad, but there are also advantages in having a settled side that can work well together.

i believe that benitez has cost liverpoo quite a few points this season.

  10. Don't talk bollocks Craccer, Harry does and always will manage by dragging in signings untill he hits the right combination. People credit him with too much accumen and ability, he surrounds himself with good and able people.

    This is just an opinion.

yeah, your absolutely right. harry's honeymoon will soon be over. still, give him credit. he saved their bacon last year. but pompey are a mid table team at best.

  11. I was not able to catch the match in here, but i heard it was Kilbane who assisted them in both their goals?...Irony......Seems like he came back to haunt us?...well get over..good luck to kilbane for he works 100% and a honest lad.....lets look forward to the next match and hopefully we do better than this time.

    50534

yeah, no broadcast because of a power failure. the put reading and sheffield on. watched about half an hour of it. that was enough. the blades are for the drop unless they wake themselves up.

saw the highlights this morning tho. kirkwood played well and may well have saved them. all the goals seemed come from bad defensive errors, on both sides.

i couldnt believe that aj would be left in the penalty area with acres of space all round him. he must have thought xmas came early!

still, no excuses. wigan are the kind of team you should take 3 points off.

i think there will be changes to the lineup next week.

  12. It doesnt seem that long ago that it was only a quid, inflation eh

But then again I think bret angel was playing for us

    50393

i'll be tuning in at 10pm local time. hope the weather is good.

its quite a weekend with sundays matches as well. arsenal could finish bottom of the league if they lose and the others win!

that would be a shocker. liverpoo will get a good hiding from chelski i trust. i hope arsenal beat manu. they must be getting pretty desperate and it will do us a big favour.

charlton are playing crap this year but they may take a point or three off portsmouth.

if all the permutations work out. we'll be a point clear of chelski at the top!

but ian dowie and martin jol are not doing quite so well! as are neil warnock and mark hughes.

  14. Anyone know who the Ref is?

Got this funny feeling this one will be a draw :-/

    50357

wigan would be happy to get a point and thats what they will be playing for. f we can get an early goal, they will be forced to be more positive.

one of the plusses of having a guy like aj is that he inspires the other guys to get among the goals as well. in fact, they know that they HAVE to get among the goals to keep their first team spot.

  15. Asking a serious question cause I've onlt seen it once, for some reason they don't show either of the penalty shout on the football first highlghts (which I've watched every night since).

Was the Hibbert 'penalty shout' DELIBERATE? I've only seen it once but if I remember correctly he slides in to block and the ball hits the arm his body weight is on. Not just being a biased Blue here, but didn't see it in the ground and was somewhat pissed watching MOTD.

p.s. Heard Mr Potato Head donkey torturer saying after Sheff Utd 'penalty' that if you question one decision such as a penalty then you have to question the referee's decisions all over the pitch!! So why the fuck was he whinging on Saturday?

    p.p.s. 3 - 0 Fuckin' Brilliant!!

    50297

they would have been very lucky, and grateful, to get a penalty for that one!

  16. "The commentators for the match pointed out several times the multiple near-misses: from Garcia, Crouch, Gerrard a couple of times as well as a few crosses that were agonizingly inches from reach and a sure-fire goal."

we dont count near misses in soccer. they have to actually hit the back of the net!

the fact is, apart from a couple of tough periods, we neve looked like losing and liverpoo never looked like winning.
