  1. What does Lukaku have that makes him so special, really? Yes, he scored a good number of goals, but he's in a position to score them. I'd think most any player would score more goals as a lone striker than he would in another position.

But I'm constantly baffled at how clumsy he looks with the ball, most of the time. (When it's not a single tap from a cross, or "the goal" against Chelsea.) His passes are often wayward, and he gets dispossessed seemingly all the time.

Anyway, I know it's not an "easy" role. (Look at how much more competent he appears than Kone and Niasse.)

I thought Benteke could have been a good replacement, but for his horrid play since he moved to LFC.

  2. Looking at Makis' well-thought-out post...

How much does command of the English language matter?

I mean, yeah, here in the US, it would be a non-starter. Sure, there are some Major League baseball players from Cuba or the Dominican Republic, etc... who don't speak much English. But a manager? That wouldn't work because nobody bothers to learn anything beyond English.

But with so many international players in the BPL, do they all have a pretty good grasp of multiple languages that it's not an issue?

I'd still think that because of the vast audience that the BPL has, including a large and growing American audience, a PL manager would need to be able to have a fairly good grasp of the English language.

  3. You do not want De Boer, guys. You seriously do not want him. I should maybe be more careful about making statements in advance, but I don't see how this can go right in any way.

For the sake of edification, why not? (I don't know him beyond the basic bio. So, not arguing, just interested in why.)

  4. Don't want us to lose, ever, either, but agreed on keeping Sunderland up. Best mate is a Sunderland supporter, so a win for them at this stage means more than a win for us.

Was looking at the relegation odds. Sunderland have a 91% likelihood of staying up. Newcastle about an 8% chance and Norwich about 1.5% of staying up. (I'm sure Sunderland's odds must be helped by the fact they're playing Everton. Plus the game in hand, obviously.)

But, I'd be happy to win out (as long as it doesn't delay an RM departure), and have Sunderland beat Watford on Sunday for a strong note for them to finish on.

  5. I know way less than everyone else here, so I'm not ashamed to ask, specifically, why the hatred of Martinez? (I'm not saying there shouldn't be extreme disappointment, but I'm wondering what the source of the anger is.)

Yes, our record is crap, and i understand how that reflects on a manager. But it also rests on the players, no?

Is it that Martinez doesn't know how to get the best out of the side? Or that he insists on an inadequate strategy? Or that he starts (and subs) the wrong players? Do the players like him?

We hear quotes from the players about how "there's no chemistry" in our side. Is this Martinez? (Not arguing that it's not; just wondering what it will take.)

I watch these matches and it's unbelievable how hot and cold our players run from one weekend to the next. I mean, against Chelsea in the FA Cup quarterfinal, Lukaku was insane. (Or maybe it was just "the goal" I remember.) But then against Palace, he doesn't even show up.

It appears that they know how to play the game, but where is the heart and soul? My God, how fortunate must one be to play soccer for a living? And an immensely lucrative living, at that. (Some look like they really DO give a damn, like Lennon, and Coleman, and Besic.)

Hard to argue that a new manager can't change things, at least statistically. Look at Chelsea. Under JM, they had 15 points from 16 games, and were as low as 16th place. Under GH, they've earned nearly double: 29 points from 16 games, and clawed their way back to 8th (before sliding two spots). If it were me, I would have had NO problem sacking Mourinho, him being ineffective AND an ass.

But as for RM, I'm not a fan, based on his results. But I wish he could have had success, because he seems like such a decent guy.

  6. Hadn't visited the Shed End before. Delightful.

    A few faves:

    This before the game:

    Fearing the worst.
Going out to a Lukaku winner will put a mouldy cherry on top of this woeful season.

    This before half time:

Costa's booking really was pathetic stuff from everton. If any of our players went in like barry did on costa or faked injury like that we would never hear the end of it.

    This at FT:

I pity the cleaner at Goodison having to clean up all that jizz in the commentary box...

  7. Offside or not, we have done this too many times this season. Its akin to having the hottest lady imaginable, the most amazing foreplay and what not, ready to do the deed, and instead you pull out your smartphone, put on your glasses, and start reading this shit :)

    That's what I'm talking about.
