Calico
I was listening to the radio last night after the match and a few dodgy people phoned up who were 'ex hooligans' saying that people who took their children to the match were naive and that this was always going to happen and it will never change. It is all really sad and I think it is pathetic when the press, ex-players and other pundits get righteous and judgemental when talking about violence and crowd trouble in other countries because the fact is that it is still very much happening in this country and we should all be talking about and concentrating on our own problems first. I don't agree with that.... football in this country is now becoming a family sport.... 99% of games go off without any serious trouble and you rarely hear of people being stabbed/killed. This is a weekly occurrence all over Europe and yet the governing bodies / media love to jump on the English when ANYTHING happens.... I don't agree with what happed last night but it was GOING to happen... they were even talking about it about 5pm on TalkSport.. hoping that there would be no crowd trouble.... In my 15 years or so of going the match Ive never really seen/heard anything more than bad/racist language. NOT ACCEPTABLE but its not like were back in the 70's with all the football violance.... The behavior last night was NOT ACCEPTABLE but don't get draw into believing that football in this country is in a bad way....
Calico
I am not getting drawn into that idea but I remember very clearly watching Man Utd fans getting escorted from Goodison back into the city by significant police presence. I literally watched it pass by from the student I was living in at the time and this was less than two years ago. People get stabbed/killed every week in Europe? Which parts do you mean? I know the thugs in Poland and the like are really bad but if we're talking about the Italian, Spanish, French and German leagues then I think it would be in the news every week. Also, just because it was going to happen, as you say, does that mean it is acceptable? I mean, we're getting into a wider social issue here so I'll try not to ramble but that kind of sentiment - as maintained by lots of hooligans and associated people in this country - is exactly what is wrong with this country. This is not passion. This is not something that can be unavoidable. This is something that should be concentrated on, since we have 99% of the game sorted out, as you say. "Man United fans being escorted back into town....." NOT really an example that backs up your argument..... Afer about 30s of searching.....http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8068088.stm ""The stabbings are now so frequently they are hardly reported in the Italian press," says Prof Foot. "A rival fan is stabbed at nearly every Roma game but it only hits the headlines when foreign fans are attacked at a game like the Champions League final."" I dont think you read my post v well... I said it was "NOT ACCEPTABLE" not its only 1% of the game so lets forget about it....
Calico
I was asking, not having a go. Thanks for interpreting that as not having read your post very well, though.
Churinga2
This is a weekly occurrence all over Europe and yet the governing bodies / media love to jump on the English when ANYTHING happens.... Probably because it has become so rare in England the media give it alot of attention, All over europe is incorrect imo. you got a bad situation in Italy, but that's the only country i can think of with big problems. Holland had a bad situation a few years ago but that period seems to be over.

DonKey
I think the press do jump on it over here more on the rare occasions now when it does kick off, because it is out of character in the domestic game. Not saying it doesn't happen, but that it is infrequent because of the orientation of the game now. From what people who witnesed last night were saying on the radio, it was quite a lot of old heads coming 'out of retirement' to prove a point. So yes, probably 'dickheads being dickheads'. Hope they realise that last night could cause a massive problem in terms of the World Cup bid. Edited August 26, 2009 by DonKey
Calico
Even Italy has improved drastically. It is likely something that is blown out of all proportion no matter where it is but I'm just someone who would prefer to deal with problems at home before looking at other places no matter what we're talking about. jamiemaher85
Well this was one big fucking surprise wasn't it. West Ham vs Milwall at a evening kick off, and there was trouble! Jesus, hardly takes Nostradamus to predict this one does it. As for comments that Milwall are the worst fans in the country, well last night it was West Ham fans that caused most of the trouble and the damage. Milwall are not really that much trouble anymore on the whole, i've been the Den a few times as one of my firends is a season ticket holder and i've never seen any trouble at all. jamiemaher85
This article is brilliant. http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/news/science-%26-technology/police-to-explain-why-they-stopped-football-fans-from--killing-each-other-200908262009/ POLICE TO EXPLAIN WHY THEY STOPPED FOOTBALL FANS FROM KILLING EACH OTHER SENIOR police officers have been told to explain why they prevented rival gangs of West Ham and Millwall fans from beating from each other to death last night. Would the police stop this?As violence flared at Upton Park, zoologists said riot police had no right to interfere with the natural process of evolution. Experts have called for new guidelines that will allow football supporters to bang each other's skulls with baseball bats until the last retard standing finally clubs himself into oblivion. Dr Tom Logan, of the Institute for Studies, said: "A full-on riot between West Ham and Millwall fans is a bit like Mother Nature's pruning shears. "We do not intervene when a pride of lions takes down an antelope, or when rival baboons fight over who gets the biggest nuts. "So when two sets of London football fans decide to have a fight, we should simply leave them be, while observing the awesome majesty of Darwin's genius." It is believed the violence flared between the rival supporters after an argument over who would be the first to grow opposable thumbs. West Ham fan, Wayne Hayes, said: "They was sayin' that one of 'em already 'ad fums and could use tools and evryfin'. "And I was like, 'you fackin' bastards, my old dad nearly 'ad fums once, you callin' me a cant?'." But Millwall fan, Nathan Muir, pointed frantically at a piece of wood, insisting: "Ee-ee! Ee-ee-ah-ah-oo-oo! Eeeeee! Eeeeee! Eeeeeeeee!"

MikeO
Always thought that rival groups of "consenting" psychopaths should be allowed to get on with it. Build them arenas, bit like bullrings, and let them kill each other without involving the innocent. They don't need to be at football matches....the game is irrelevant.
