The West African Football Union is a sub-confederation which organises international tournaments for the West African region. WAFU created the award to honour West African players who ply their trade in Europe. The new award will be given to the player who receives the most votes from the public. The vote is carried out by SMS and telephone. The other nominees are: Ghana Michael EssienAndre Ayew Sulley Ali Muntari Côte d'Ivoire Kéita KaderYaya Touré Didier Drogba Benin Stéphane Sessegnon Nigerian John Obi Mikel Togo Emmanuel Adebayor Burkina Faso Moumouni Dagano Jonathan Pitroipa Mali Frédéric Kanouté Kéita Seydou Senegal Mamadou Niang Guinea Pascal Feindounou.
