Matt
Can someone explain to me how this can be considered "not" racist: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/8955148.stm
jamiemaher85
It's ludicrous. I read one blog about this where Lokomotiv fans starting writing in to defend it saying, "It wasn't racist, he had a terrible season which is why we are happy he has gone". To which one WBA fan asked "Well why have you got a picture of banana on the banner?". To which they stopped responding!
marcopaulo
"If there would be another player - from Russia, Denmark, Norway or Japan, for example - the reaction could be the same. In Russia 'to get a banana' means 'to fail a test somewhere'. if that is true then maybe it has been blown up out of proportion as so many things do..just cos he is black people try to see other things in it
Matt
if that is true then maybe it has been blown up out of proportion as so many things do..just cos he is black people try to see other things in it The phrase 'to get a banana' existed in the time of the Soviet Union and has almost disappeared from the slang. The RFU simply doesn't want to recognize that banner as a racism. Either way, the implications are clear to see and they should have the common sense to know that sticking a banana on a banner aimed at coloured players is going to be misconstrued. marcopaulo
you could say common sense on part of the people who see it as racist should be there..not like they did it in our country then it would be different

dark
It made me laugh. It's totally not racist, it's just them showing their appreciation for West Brom
DonKey
What a piss take. 'In Russia, to get a banana means to fail a test' Really?!?!?!

Bill
What a piss take. 'In Russia, to get a banana means to fail a test' Really?!?!?! So on that basis the banner that they are displaying is thanking West Brom for failing a test.
Kohen
Nope, that he failed the test at Lokomotiv! But, I asked my Russian friend if she'd heard the phrase, and she said it was used in like the 80's and it was more probably meant in a racist way
