They were in contention for a title too at the time and not really a championship decider on the night, they had a very good side, Hoddle, Roberts, Clive Allen etc and we went down there and took a massive step towards the title that year. Lost 4-1 at Goodison on opening weekend I think if memory serves to the same opposition so it was a great night for all concerned. Gray and Steven got the goals I think before Graham Roberts from a long way out made it edgy late on, but that season Southall must have been worth an extra 15 points to us. Speaking of tonight, I remember Madrid made an offer of £3,000,000 for Southall in 1990, a massive sum for a first division goalkeeper at the time, but It's good we turned them down as he still had plenty to offer, the man is a club icon and deserves his legendary status.
