Omg hate mail coming my way... but there are in fact only 46 as Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts are all officially Commonwealths. edit* I actually thought there was orignally 5, and Hawaii and Alaska were the last two added to make 52. Hence the confusion over whether there IN the US or Of the US.
