  1. Uh Oh!

New Everton manager Roberto Martinez: "A large amount of my backroom staff will come with me. The fans need to know they are the most important part of this club, and I will need them. What David Moyes has done is set a real high standard.

"We need to make sure we are a winning side and a strong side that can carry on achieving more. Finishing in the top-six was a magnificent achievement, and we need to keep building if we want to improve on that."

  2. From the press conference:

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright: "When David [Moyes] first came to see me, he sat down, and we were in a bad state. First words, he said we are not going down. Roberto's first words, he will get us in the Champions League. He had obviously studied the football club and recognised what David Moyes has achieved.

"But he sat and talked to me and showed me how he beat Manchester City at Wembley. I went to that game, sat among the crowd, to look at Roberto.

"He understands the game and Everton. He told us about our history and what he wanted to do. It was a terrific meeting. All I can tell you is, when you know, you know."

"I'll give him a few quid to sign a few players. We all know the situation at Everton, we all know that there are players with release clauses but they are not for sale.

"We don't want them to go. Not one person had even half-indicated to me that the change will mean a change for them - exactly the opposite, they all seem totally committed to it. I'm confident that the squad plus some Roberto signings will form the squad for next season."

    In Bill we trust, too!

  3. So its still not confirmed to be Martinez? No news apart from the press conference? Curve ball anyone? Haha *puts on hat made from tin foil

    From efc.com

Everton Football Club is today delighted to confirm the appointment of Roberto Martinez as its next manager.

The 39-year-old Spaniard joins from Wigan Athletic and has signed a four-year contract at Goodison Park.

Mr Martinez will be officially unveiled as the Club’s 14th permanent manager at a media conference on Wednesday afternoon.

  4. Bit of interesting info here, he's an LLP member (a partner in the business) of a company that was founded in April called 'Proctor House Newcastle LLP' along with 32 others, including Mucha, Fellaini, Osman, Hibbert, Distin, Jelavic, Sam Allardyce and Joe Calzaghe.

Whilst playing for Real Zaragoza, Martínez obtained a bachelor's degree in physiotherapy.%5B2%5D He also has a postgraduate diploma in business management, which he obtained from Manchester University.[

  5. From The BBC: (From Cake: How the fuck do the BBC bring The Shite into everything!!?? AAAAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!)

Everton agree Roberto Martinez compensation with Wigan

Everton have reached an agreement with Wigan over compensation for manager Roberto Martinez and could name him as their boss by Wednesday.

The Spaniard, 39, is thought to have been Everton's first choice to replace David Moyes, who signed a six-year contract to manage Manchester United.

Martinez said last month he would leave Wigan after four years at the helm.

"Bill Kenwright [Everton chairman] and myself have agreed a deal," Wigan chairman Dave Whelan told BBC Sport.

Last week, the Toffees were given permission to speak to Martinez following his request to leave the FA Cup winners after their eight-year Premier League stay came to an end last season.

Whelan originally told BBC Radio 5 live at the time that "Roberto has resigned", but a Wigan statement in response said that Martinez remained in charge at the DW Stadium but had been given permission to talk to other clubs.

Martinez, who joined Wigan from Swansea in June 2009, was a target for Aston Villa in June 2011 but opted to stay. He was also strongly linked with the Liverpool job last summer.

In his first managerial role, Martinez guided Swansea to promotion to the Championship in 2008.

Then he joined Wigan - a team for whom he played for six years from 1995 - keeping the club in the Premier League for three seasons despite working with a lower budget than many of his rivals.

Under his reign, Wigan finished 16th twice and 15th before slipping to 18th this season, although the Latics continued to attract praise for their style of football.

Despite their relegation, Wigan's shock 1-0 FA Cup victory against Manchester City at Wembley means they will compete in next season's Europa League.

  6. The Great Gatsby. Hands down the worst film I've ever seen in the cinema.

    Jeepers Creepers

Deciding whether or not to stay up and watch The Hills Have Eyes on TCM a bit later but I could always catch up with it tomorrow by having a wander around ASDA in Halesowen! No wonder WalMart bought into ASDA!

  7. It's ok cake, wouldn't it be boring if we all had the same ideas?

Stick around the forum, more members keep the place alive, never think you can't post your opinion. It might get heated from time to time but it's all part of the fun.

On topic, I do think he's a good businessman in his other business. I only disagree with hard nosed.

I'll be sticking around thanks StevO. I'm not that precious to think I'm not allowed to post (that was a poor attempt at cyber-sarcasm which, yet again, doesn't always come across in the right way), neither do I expect/hope to be everyone's friend (or enemy, come to that). I'm not someone who will have a hissy fit because someone disagrees with me or pulls me up on something.

We just don't agree on what does and doesn't constitute being a hard nosed businessman - no harm done, nobody's hurt, etc

    Cheers

  8. No, I think he's not a hard nosed businessman by his public demeanour. He does not come across as hard nosed, he comes across as approachable, friendly, open, and generally not as aggressive or defiant as say Alan Sugar.

You don't need to change an opinion in order to be liked, we both see a different side of someone, we disagree. It's not a problem, it's perfectly normal, if we all agreed there would be no need for a forum.

We'll have to disagree about Bill, then, as aggression and defiance are miles away from being hard nosed.... in anything........ but that's as it is.

I'm glad we agree on something, though, and that there's no problem.

  9. If Villa had gone down this year I'd have still thought Lambert was an excellent manager.

Definitely. Difficult to repair the mess left by O'Neill, Houllier & McLeish although I was hoping Villa would go down (and Newcastle, too, for that matter) and continue to drop for the forseeable future.

I don't think we're dithering just yet to our previous dithering heights but give it until the end of June and it will be a different story.

  10. You don't think he's a hard nosed businessman because he chooses the right people to work for him, apart from at EFC. I do think he's a hard nosed businessman. That makes us quite the opposite, fortunately, and means another meaningless discussion can now gather pace.

I also think he's a great leader but, newbie or not, I'm not going to attempt to explain myself again although the desire to be liked makes me feel quite the opposite.
