  1. Im not sure why Cenk has dropped so far off the radar.

Personally I like him.  Im not sure where the obsession with pace has come from - we have lots of that elsewhere in the squad.  Hes at least as fast as Harry Kane...

He works hard, good finisher, offers an aerial threat, holds the ball up...

He's been here 5 minutes and been messed around since day 1.  Give him a chance!

My passion for Everton goes back only 20 years, and really I’ve been able to follow our club closely for only about the last 10 or 12 on American tv.  So I’m probably not qualified to judge our boys quite so fiercely as seve has here.

    But .....

The mental qualites I most value in athletes are relentlessness and alertness.  The essence of football surely demands, and rewards, these attributes.  Too many of our players do not play relentlessly, and their alertness, maddeningly, wanes at crucial moments.  Even the best players make stupid plays occasionally.  But presumably the best teams are best in large part because they are composed of players who demonstrate their skills regularly and their mistakes rarely.  The best players are physically gifted but also mentally alert.

Too often our players — individually and in groups — don’t pay attention, are not alert, to the play around them.  We all complain when one of our own is ball-watching.  On the Spurs’ 3d goal, our wall collectively turned once the ball sailed over their heads ...and watched ... as Kane tapped in the rebound off the post.  They did not much move.  They weren’t, individually or collectively, alert to the possibilities of the play in the moment.  In a fundamental sense, they were’t ready to play football.  Not daydreaming, exactly, but not alert, relentless football instincts, either.  Not a bonehead play, like Pickford’s.  But lazy, as seve says, “soft underbelly.” A Christmas gift to Kane.

We’re far too good at gift-giving.  We give away goals, and thus points.  We seem to have more physical talent this season.  But we are mostly mentally soft, rarely relentless, intermittently inattentive to the basics of the game.

Totally.  We aren’t aggressive enough as a team - we need a Keane/Gerrard to drive this team forward.  Haven’t had an inspirational leader for as long as I can remember

i wonder if the alertness  is lack of fitness?

The gulf between us and the top sides I'm beginning to fear is so big I'll never see it bridged in my life time, so I just need to get use to it.

I reckon another £400-500m to reach the top 4

Years and years of under investment means we have to buy a slightly better set of players, improve, then buy the next tier etc...

    Pickford has had a howler.

Should have been booked at the very least at the end there. Gotta worry about this team now. The midfield are like ghosts and give the opposition so much time on the ball, that they just cut us apart with their through balls. Was the same in the last few games. Defense is utterly shambolic, probably not helped by Pickford charging around like an enraged headless chicken. There’s no composure at all. Going forward we’ve been quite good, although as in all the games recently some of the passing is atrocious, don’t know how you can call yourself a professional footballer if you can’t pass the bleeding ball!

I don’t know for what possible reason our goal was disallowed, dodgy ref me thinks, but can’t exactly say the score line is not a fair reflection of the game. At this rate big Sam will be back again by the summer. Going into a tailspin. We need a win and some confidence back.

I hereby optimistically predict we will win 4-3.

    Wow!  No chance!
