Missed it by a few minutes but yesterday (July 5) was

John Willie Parker - prolific center forward of years past that had a dynamic partnership with David Hickson and was regular top scorer in the 1950s. Was also a hit at Bury after moving on, and averaged a goal every two games at both clubs. Would be worth an astronomical sum of money in todays (inflated) transfer market - 88 Years Old Today

James Cunliffe - another attacker of merit, Cunliffe managed over seventy goals in the great side of the 1930s and won honors, but only managed one or two international call ups - would have been 101 years old today (Died 1986)

July 6

Magaye Gueye - promising player but still waiting to see his full potential - 23 Years Old Today

George Telfer - no thrills attacking unit of the Bingham / Lee tenures that had a decent goals to games ratio but something of a forgotten name - 58 Years Old Today

John Thomson - legendary club servant who featured in nearly 300 games at EFC in the 1920s / 30s, but eventually fell out of favor and retired to eventually become a managerial figure - would have been 107 Years Old Today (died 1979)

I thought better than to participate in one other general sports thread on this index today, but only to add

Michael Thomas - short lived Welsh player that quickly fell out of favor with new manager Howard Kendall and went on to have more clubs than Arnold Palmer including shock Wrexham win over Arsenal in 1992 and much replayed strike - 59 Years Old today

Robert Menham - goalkeeping figure of the nineteeth century who earned a runners-up medal in the 1897 FA Cup Final defeat to Aston Villa - would have been 142 years old today

Imre Varadi - short lived striker of the Gordon Lee era who at least earned recognition by scoring against Liverpool in a 1981 derby FA Cup game (and victory) against Liverpool but wasn't given the opportunity by new manager Howard Kendall and went on to better things with Sheffield Wednesday and Manchester City - 54 Years Old Today

Tomorrow - 9th July

Jason Kearton - Antipodean reserve keeper of the 1990s who recieved an FA cup winners medal in 1995 but was never featured much - 44 years old

how old did you think he was.

would have been in his mid 20s for the FA cup win over Manchester United so feasible enough. Was Southall's deputy for almost a decade but only featured less than a dozen times. Very hard to move out a player of that caliber, even if Southall was by that time, undeniably past his supreme best.

Only one Birthday today but it's a significant one nonetheless

Tony Cottee - seems a steal at 'only' the £2,000,000 we paid WHU in the summer of 1988 for his services and scored three goals on his debut and 99 altogether for Everton in the league before being released around 1994. Usually scored, was always dangerous, very established center forward of his time, and turned down Arsenal in 1988 in favor to join Everton.

In retrospect it was the wrong decision, but still a fine player and he scored some goals here for sure although never was able to win anything - 48 Years Old Today

Alan Irvine - Club academy figure and involved as a player in the early 1980s with a handful of goals to his name - 55 Years Old Today

Gordon Lee - some people, I won't call them Idiots, always say Lee was a poor manager, but they really need to give their head a shake. Between 1976 - 1980 the club did a great job of things, although never actually won anything. Lee could be frustrating at times, but actually was a very fine manager and came only a whisker away from bringing an actual trophy back to Goodison Park. I wish him well today - 79 Years Old

Roberto Martinez - don't know who he is but, - 40 Years Old Today

great day for club managers, both past, and present

July 14

James Vaughan - youngest EPL scorer at the end of the 2004/05 season in a game with Crystal Palace. Spent more time on the injury roster than games involved, managed a handful of goals and sporadic appearances over six years and was also loaned out - 25 Years Old Today

George Martin - better than average center forward, that saw title wins, a promotion and also a relegation, but had been transfered just before the FA cup win over Manchester City - would have been 114 Years Old Today. Died 1972

He does have one claim to shame and that was going 24 consecutive away games, September 1979 to September 1980, without a win (yes there were a few draws in there), the equivalent of more than a season and the 3rd worst in EFC history in that measure.

I will always remember him fondly for hiding in the dugout at the end of another abysmal home performance to shelter from the hail of faux leather-clad foam cushions people had been resting their irritated arses on for the previous 90 minutes and who were now letting him have it, big time, from all corners of The Main Stand at the end of another spineless twatting at home. They were even having a go from the Upper Bullens and Upper Gwladys although they didn't have a hope in hell of reaching him.

Then there was the time towards the end of his tenure when he was caught laughing on tv highlights as our opponents (can't recall who) stuck another one in the onion bag after yet another defensive cock-up. This was likely the final straw as he was on his way not long after.

He brought us the likes of George Wood, Trevor Ross and Peter Eastoe. We finished 3rd in the league once, mid-table once, 19th once and 15th the season before he was sacked. We only finished 3rd (and 4th, also once but a long way back from 3rd) because he was fortunate enough to have inherited Bob Latchford's shooting boots. He did sign Graeme Sharp, though, and he gave Ratcliffe his debut. He also inherited Duncan McKenzie, who he sold because he didn't like him as he didn't fit in with his style of play. This fucker, Lee, was even more dour and had even less flair than Moyes.

That whisker away from a trophy was in the most boring League Cup Final ever, followed by two replays. He did reach the semi-final of The FA Cup twice

So no, all things considered he wasn't a poor manager. He was mostly fucking shite! In 5 years or so he won nothing, we played dour, long ball football and he almost had us relegated twice, which he ultimately found amusing.

I'll always maintain Lee did a fine job. Fair enough the league wasn't all one way traffic after the top four finishes in 1978 and 1979 and there were struggles evident, but even Moyes and Kendall first time around had a difficult time of it in the league at one time or another. As you mentioned, and most will be aware, the two FA cup semi finals were a notable achievement as was the 1977 League Cup final. All said, it wasn't a bad haul.

In any event

Paul Bracewell - midfield unit of the 1980s (1990s) that won a prize or two, but lost out more often than most in an FA Cup Final - 51 Years Old Today

Ah, that thousand yard stare.

A man with little or no sense of humour and to be left well alone. Very handy with his fists and more than happy to show it. Battered Sheedy, I've heard, for taking the piss at an Everton 'do'.

Per Kroldrup - possibly the biggest waste of money since the idea of the Millenium Dome. Defensive unit, played two or three games, paid a substantial amount of money. Worse player at Goodison Park than Claus Thomsen or Michael Milligan, so bad he deserves a mention - 34 Years of age Today
