Toulon Tournament - May 2014

I don't know why, but yes.

The British press used to hide the fact according to Martin Samuel.

There was one drawback. The 40 minutes each way. News editors were already green with envy having sent you on what they perceived to be an all-expenses-paid beano in the south of France. If they then found out that this tournament didn’t even play the full 90 minutes, well, that was your lot.

And this is where the covert operation came in. If the reporters were smart, nobody need ever know about the missing 10 minutes. Match reports became exercises in obfuscation. The first half was fine. Sentences began ‘in the fifth minute, in the 17th minute, in the 38th minute’, just the same.

As the game neared the end, however, descriptions became more creative. A goal scored in the 75th minute, was always described vaguely as having occurred ‘with five minutes to go’, a goal in the 80th minute was a ‘last-minute winner’.
