Lucas Neill

Recommended Posts

As a squad player, I think he will be a good signing. Who else is available at the moment on a FREE TRANSFER that can bolster our defence? He's and EPL player, he's a national team captain. The transfer window is over and we've got a small squad as it is.

Yep totally agree. Proven prem level player, on a free. Some people here want us to get squad players in... and when we do for nothing, they are not good enough.. I think he wil be a good addition. nothing barnstorming, but good.

Get him signed I say. I dunno where all this 'we've got too many options at the back' is coming from - we're SERIOUSLY short of numbers. What would happen if Yobo or Distin got injured in the next few weeks? With Lescott, Valente and Jacobsen gone, we're actually less than we were at the back last season - Hibbert, Heitinga, Neville, Distin, Yobo, Jags, Baines. Gosling is a RM, not a RB. That's not even two men per position. And I know people keep banging on about Coleman and Duffy, but they've obviously not done enough for the reserves to look like first team players so far this season, so let's not clutch at straws.

So yeah, free agent with tons of Prem experience, gritty attitude and captain of his national side - plus a personal recommendation from Tiny Tim - no brainer really. And whoever said sign up Michael Ball for nowt, that's not a bad idea either coz the way i see it we have one natural left back in the squad at the moment

What is far more worrying is Moyes plan to play Heitinga in the middle...

Stated by an un-named Guardian journalist as expectation. How you can make that become "Moyes plan" is beyond me.

...new signing John Heitinga is expected to be required in central midfield to replace Neville.

Kipper is a vile, and extremely unreliable site of horse manure. I wouldn't even ask them for the time of day, as those illiterates haven't a clue.

That quote could have been written about yourself

Despite all the obvious money grabbing quotes, I'm sure he'll do well for us

Im not a huge fan of Neill's but lets face it we need more bodies and if reports are true a one year deal with a view to extend sounds like good buisness to me.

Not sure if Moyes plans to play Heitinga in the holding/defensive role but he has played there before and hopefully when Jags is back i hope he gets back into his stride and puts Yobo back on the bench.

If he does sign any idea's on our backline?

Heitinga----Distin----Neill----Baines

Neill----Distin----Heitinga----Baines

Neill----Distin----Yobo----Baines

-------------Heitinga

Seriously why is anyone complaining bout the possible signing of lucas. Hes going to be one of the best defenders in your team if he signs. Although he is a CENTRAL defender first and foremost. He is better then jags. Use should play a back line of

Heitinga jags neil baines

with distin (left back/centre back) Yobo (centre back/right back) and Hibbert (right back) as your back ups.

What a cracker, between that quote "better than Jags" and the thread "let's sell Pienaar" i'm going for a lie down.

nothing on the everton website so unsure about the truth to this...would be a good option for us though. Nevilles injury has forced moyes to use heitinga as defensive midfielder as its not ideal to just have rodwell in that position - hopefully he can shake off his 'little boy lost'/'headless chicken' approach and settle there. Neil will then be used at RB as I don't think moyes wants to break up the yobo-distin partnership.....otherwise moysey, I can play right back!!!! ;)

If you're an Aussie, I'm deeply embarrased to be associated with you. There is NO WAY at all that Neill is better than Jags. No way. I don't even know why I'm arguing it!

Fact is where did Moyes play him last Sunday? When Hibbert could have been shipped off and Heitinga and Billy brought on, dear Moyes elected to play Heitinga at center mid and Billy still benched, which makes the article more believable than your assumption lad. Oh I forgot, Moyes love of playing players out of their natural position also gives it credence.

GTFO with your nonsense, Moyes doesn't play players out of position because he loves to, he does it out of necessity. Moyes favours knowing what he's going to get over an unknown quantity, because you can't plan for an unknown quantity.

Grow up and stop with the Moyes bashing.

From Daily MAil today

Everton will sign Australia defender Lucas Neill on a free transfer today and pay him half the wages he got at West Ham.

The 31-year-old is a free agent after failing to agree an extension of his £80,000-a-week Upton Park deal in the summer.

He has seen proposed moves to Sunderland and Athletico Madrid collapse because of personal terms.

Neill caused a storm in 2007 when he rejected Liverpool to sign for West Ham, insisting it was for footballing reasons and not the huge wages offered to him.

Everton hope his close friendship with fellow Aussie and former Millwall team-mate Tim Cahill will help seal the deal and expect to snap him up in time to face former club Blackburn on Sunday.

Neill is the second-youngest player at 18 years and seven months to play for Australia - behind Harry Kewell - and has represented the Socceroos 50 times. He has captained them three times.

Toffees' boss David Moyes, is desperate for defensive reinforcements as new £6.3m signing John Heitinga will be required in central midfield following the loss of skipper Phil Neville to a serious knee injury suffered at Fulham last weekend- he will be out for up to three months.

Like a lot of people I'm not a big fan of Lucas Neil.....But come on he did turn down liverpool, so he's almost a Blues legend already!....Seriously though, he has been touted over the last few seasons as a very good player, bit long in the tooth, but a good old'un is way better than an average young'n!

He set's his stall out with the price he believes people should pay for his services, if he delivers, then I for one would be glad to have him around for a few seasons.

As for the Heitinga holding midfield thing!.....Against Fulham, not that impressive hey!

Well in that second half against Fulham, who WAS?...When Jags first came he played a few games in that role, and to a man we thought he was very poor....hell we even questioned his signing in general. My point being, he's turned out to be a great player, ok, mainly in the central defence, but early days most fans would have been happy for us to move him on.Heitinga has played one game, his first in the prem in a team who look anything but assured, on a day when his team mates didn't exactly offer him their services, it could still work out, if he (Heitinga) thinks he can do it, surely he must be given at least a chance, before we condem him to the scrap heap with.......Jagielka.

Someone....I think, has said that he didn't really look very big!.....what unlike old "lanky" Carsley  who it appears did do a too bad a job for us.

He speaks very good English for a foreign player.

He said the reasons he signed are:

1. Moyes has impressed him

2. It's a traditional club

3. Tim Cahill

4. He wants to be involved in Oz's World cup campaign

Anyway after four years was mooted, he has signed for one year only. Will be interested to hear the breakdown of contract terms, and any possible extensions.

lol alrite i admit im wrong when i say hes better then Jags (just my aussie colours shining through). But he is more suited to the centre and plays best there, i think hed be a better option to partner jags when hes back. Can yobo play right back?

Personally I can't see anything wrong with this transfer.

We got rid of one player, and brought in 3 with the money and now another...as far as I'm concerned this is more great business for Moyes.

Our total possible* defense start of season:

Jags (injured)

Yobo

Lescott

Baines

Hibbert

Rodwell*

Neville

Gosling*

Our total possible* defence at present:

Jags(injured)

Yobo

Distin

Baines

Hibbert

Neill

Heitinga

Neville(injured)

Rodwell*

Gosling*

Rodwell and Gosling will normally play midfield, but Gosling showed great promise in last night's match of being a quality RB which means we now have up to 5 people who can play there, Neill as far as I know can also play CB so we have 5 for that, and we have 3 capable of playing left back.

Honestly compare our team now to last season, I'd say when our injuries are over in 6 - 8 weeks (longer for Neville), we'll be much stronger than we were, and be in a better position considering we have players coming back only 4 games in. Neill won't just walk into the team he'll have to fight to get in, but I for one am relishing the thought of a strong and experienced bench to back up a strong and experienced starting 11. Fuck spurs they always say they'll compete and wind up around 10th, Man City have the weight of expectation and their "stars" antics to deal with, Villa have lost strong players, and that's all we're really competing with for 5th. Depending on whether we can take the maximum from these next soft games (Blackburn H, Portsmouth A, Stoke H, Wolves H, Bolton A) we could be 4th by Halloween.

Or we could lose all confidence and play crap and end up bottom. Don't think so somehow.

I'm happy to see him in the squad. Thought he has always been great for Australia at international level and hope he does well at Everton. As has been said, bit of a hot head at times, hopefully it won't cost us.

To be honest I thought we may have secured his services before the window shut... given our need for a RB and financial difficulties... perhaps another excellent piece of business letting him lanquish for a month without playing, world cup looming, offering a lower wage and getting it accepted...

How much of the wage grab responsibility would fall on his agent? If the agent continually tells the player he's worth more and to hold out... or is it inflated self worth following west ham?

Cannot believe the reaction to this signing. All I ever hear from Everton fans is whinges about 1. Tony Hibbert not being up to EPL standard, and 2. We don't have enough squad depth to compete in both the EPL and Europa. And now, we go and sign a guy who can play Hibbert's position, and add some much needed depth to the squad, and most people seem annoyed at the signing? He's no world beater, but he'll do a job for us, and fill an important hole. Let's not forget, we signed him on a FREE.

And I for one love the fact that he turned down Liverpool. Makes his move to Goodison all the more sweeter.

I was a bit sceptical of signing him at first, but when I think about it another Aussie in the squad is always good :)

Lucas is a good player, having watched him many times for Australia and around the Premier League there is no doubt he is quality. My only concern now is I'm not all that keen to see Heitinga play at DM which is what seems will be the case now that Neill is here.

One question though, will Neill be eligable for Europe? I would have thought he would be because he hasn't played for anybody in Europe competition this season, unlike Heitinga who had and was therefore ineligable.

dont think he will be available untill maybe the later stages as i think we had to submit a squad for the first stages....i think after the first stage we can then submit a new squad. i could be wrong though.

Assuming everyone is free from injury, what is our best defense now?

Heitinga Jags Distin Baines

Neill Jags Heitinga Baines

?

I posed the same question myself mate im not to sure what Moyes has planned with who and what we have brought in for a change a nice one at that we have plenty of options, Myself i think our strongest back line would be Heitinga Jags Distin Baines for me i think Distin will play a big part in our season with his experience and leadership qualities, Aslong as Jags gets back to his old self he is a cert and so is Baines im just unsure on how good Heitinga is as i've not seen enough of him to judge him fairly but from what little i have seen and what people think of him i would put at RB as he is quicker then both Hibbert and Neill and would complement Pienaar better.

---------------Howard

Heitinga----Jags----Distin----Baines

--------------Rodwell

Pienaar---Arteta----Fellaini---Bily

---------------Yakubu

Not a bad line up which ever way you shape it really :)

That's what I'd go for (although I might swap Yak with Saha).

Very balanced team.

Great little on paper, we just need to start playing to our abilities. We need some wins in the league pronto.

I was unsure about this at first but i've really come around to it now. Not much more you can ask for. Premier League and International experience. Has captained Blackburn, West Ham and Australia. All the players we have signed are captains (Niell, Hietinga, Distin, Bilyaletinov). He will be a great addition to the bench and adds the depth we need to challenge for Europe. When (and if) we have a full team available to us we will have a very strong line-up and bench, which is a very refreshing change. I for one can't remember having such depth to the team in recent years, weare not perfect yet in terms of numbers but we are getting close.

Thought he came across quite well in his little interview on Ch5. Didn't sound at all like the Billy Big Balls I thought he would. Praise for Moyes, praised the club, said it would be good playing with Cahill, and then said he hoped to play a 'small but significant part' in our season.

Like a lot of folk on here I was unsure about him, but he is a decent player who adds depth and experience to a good squad.

All in all, quite pleased with the lads we've brought in! Well done Moyesy!
