Maybe others on here have but I haven't seen Shane at work every day for the past few years. However, Moyes, Round and the rest of the coaching staff did and they didn't think he was ready. Now Martinez, Jones and coaching team have come in and it seems they don't think he's ready yet either.
Maybe a season at a good standard in the Championship will get the best out of him but I think its reasonable to assume that there are a number of people better qualified than us to make an assessment on whether he can improve our team.

I thought Anzhi were in the process of cutting their wage bill?

Unless anything official comes from either club if just ignore it.
P.S next week I'm gonna teach you how to suck eggs.
My grandmother is dead! How can you be so insensitive :shaking fist:

Its difficult not getting pulled along with all the conspiracy theories but we have to look at what we wanted to achieve from participating in the competition. If we'd not been stitched up and won it, would we qualify for Europe this season?
We went for 1) fitness 2) match practise and fine tuning systems 3) exposure and finance.
I'd say we got what we went for, and whilst its frustrating and annoying there's nothing that we can do in the moment. I wouldn't enter it next year though, as it seems a bit mickey mouse in terms of organisation and structure.
This is true, however there are some fans who have organsied their travel around the 3/4 play off game and this is on a different day.

This quote from Moyes today made me smile - sounds familiar...........
"I am quite confident we will add to the squad. But what we have here is a really good squad of players already. You mustn't forget about the quality that is already here at Manchester United."
-
I think that someone will meet the buy-out clause for Felli, there'll be a bit of an auction and he'll go for around 25 mill. That will leave a couple of weeks for us to get a couple of really decent signings in before deadline day (striker and midfield replacement) and I expect most Evertonians will be happy with that. I believe Bainesy will stay.
-
It was 30 million euros, not pounds. He was also 22 or 23 at the time which makes a difference.
Chelsea paid 20m for Bosingwa when he was 26. Anyone think he's a better player than Bainesy?
-
Have to say it isn't getting me terribly excited, I was hoping for better. That said, I'm not complaining because of his age and potential sell-on value.
Spurs have offered 17m for Soldado and he's 28 so its not like people aren't paying good money for people of that age.
As has already been said, I think he's better than Vic but still think we'll need to try and get another main line striker in if we sell Felli or Baines (or Jela).
-
If Fellaini goes I would like us to go back to Fer again. Anyway going back to the topic. I am excited about the prospect of Martinez being Everton manager and see what he does in the transfer market. Has anybody from our scouting network gone to United? If not then we can still get a few gems.
I believe our chief scout is going with Moyes - Robbie Cooke (can't say I'd heard of him.

Put it this way when you are dealing with Wigan resources you have to be resourceful. You gotta hunt where the competition is less, that means outside of the european leagues, lower level clubs, observe which players are being released by Barca's youth system etc. The likes of Man City and Man United can use the champions league as their scouting programme as they can afford to.
Wouldn't surprise me if RM has a list of players he wanted for Wigan but couldn't quite afford in terms of the wages etc who will be gems.
Sooner lose Felli than Baines. Plus he will get us more money. Think RM may get as much as £20m to spend...
I may be dreaming but I'm expecting that we'll have somewhere like 10-15m to spend even without selling.
Big jump in the TV revenues from this season, higher than anticipated league position (at £1m per place), more live TV monies than projected from last season plus we didn't spend the Fer money in January.
Then he might get to spend more if he generates some from the current playing staff.
Here's hoping...........

Martinez says the transfer market is 'global'. He strikes me as the kind of person who'll have in depth knowledge of lots of players strengths and weaknesses and not just those that were within Wigan's buying power.
I reckon that he'll have a good list of targets that will improve the squad - then its down to Bill and Elstone to back up Bill's words.
I wouldn't mind betting that Elstone nearly choked when Bill came out with that - stick a microphone in front of him and he can't help himself!
-
Would you honestly play him ahead of Distin or Jagielka though? He did fine when he played those couple of games for us in the league, but he also didn't strike me as particularly fast, and he's only really played at League One level. I'd be shopping him to decent sides in the Championship, so he can get 30 games under his belt and return next summer, when Distin's contract is up and likely won't be renewed again.
I think the point is that we'll likely go to a back 3 so we'll need additional cover to be able to accommodate that formation, plus this guy already is already well versed in Martinez's tactical formations.
For free, seems like a no-brainer (esp if Heits goes for a decent fee).

Nah, sorry but I view it differently.
My view of a successful youth development is how many make it fully into our first team or get sold at a nice whopping figure.
I dont think any player is recruited on the first basis that we will give him a career at whatever level...the first basis is always going to be that they will make it for Everton.
Thats my view and what I would expect to see if I owned the club. Otherwise, your investing your money for other clubs benefits??? Like in private everyday business, a business trains its staff to be a success within that business.
Then you'd only have 3 players in your academy

Do you think Martinez would have resigned from Wigan if he knew he wasn't certain to get the Everton job? I just think why would you resign from Wigan if you haven't got another job lined up? If he doesn't get this one then I think he will get the Malaga job anyway.
I think he will have expected to be a sure thing for the Everton job and now he's having to work for it - which is no bad thing for the club. It shows our credentials as a big step up from Wigan.
No doubt he'll be disappointed if he doesn't get it but there'll be plenty of offers for him. Something like 75% of PL managers moved in the past year!
And if he doesn't get it, more power to Everton who have identified a better candidate.

Found it, SharpysVolley needs to work on his spelling.
Sorry, I knew I'd spelt it wrong (cut & paste from bbc) but couldn't work out how to edit the title :dont know:

Wigan's best paid are on less than Anichebe, paints a picture of how hard Martinez's job was.
Or how unrealistic/generous Anichebe's contract is?
For all the people commenting on how Everton have overachieved in recent years, that is only over achievement in terms of the transfer market spend. Everton's players are well paid. Remember Arteta took 10k/week drop when he joined Arsenal.
Our annual spend on player salaries is about 10th in the league but we have a small squad compared to most, so per player the wage structure is pretty competitive.
-
Wigan made 3m more than we did since 2006/7.
Wigan made 7m more than us - 5m profit versus 2m spend
-
I can't do your maths. Even 50k euros/week only adds up to 2.2m pounds/year?
-
exactly. Forget that the transfer fee might be low, hes on a very nice contract (50k Euro a year) which would mean 5m a year off the wage bill.
??

Have to say, Martinez wasn't my first choice (Pereira) but we have to hope that he is appointed now.
He won't be short of offers to take over at other clubs, Malaga being another linked.
If he holds talks with us and doesn't take the post then that will raise concerns and rumour about what we've had to tell him about potential transfer targets, players out, the immediate club future etc.
So lets hope we have productive talks over the next couple of days, get him in well before the start of pre-season and give him some time to get settled at the club.

It will definitely be an interesting glimpse into the new manager's philosophy when playing against those teams. I dont expect full strength 11's throughout the competition but I dont see why first team players wouldn't be playing in a majority of the games.
This is certainly a step up from previous seasons and also valuable overseas marketing.
AC Milan are also competing in the Audi Cup in Munich July 31-1st August, so must be splitting their squad?

Everton is more/bigger than just a badge. We still have a MANAGER position to fill and we need to rebuild the squad for next season. We're going to have a hard time holding on to our top players come the next transfer window, at the same time bringing in good players. We have a skint board with no money. All this hoo-haa about a badge. I don't like it, but it's done, it's here, let's move on!
This.... people losing perspective on this topic

I think if Martinez thought he was ready now he wouldn't need to send him on loan for a season but I agree he needs more than reserve football. It seems that Stones has also jumped ahead of him in the pecking order but with Heitinga likely to go and Distin's age, there could be opportunities for him on the future if he goes on loan, gets plenty of game time and shows the necessary improvement.
