Potential Fa Cup Changes

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Hope you're all well. I just wanted to know what your thoughts are on the proposed changes for the FA Cup? Reports over the weekend claim the Football Association is looking at radicalising the competition, with suggestions such as moving the time of the final to 5:30, scrapping replays, seeding teams and giving the winners a spot in the Champions League.

What do you think of the ideas? Are they necessary? Having just done a feature on the subject, which you're more than welcome to have a look at (if you get the chance of course) it will be great to hear your feelings on the matter, whether they're viewed on here or on the site.

The feature can be found here:

Many thanks!

Moving the final to 5.30...why  ?

Scrapping replays...why would that increase interest? Are they suggesting people go to games in the hope of seeing a penalty shoot-out?

Seeding teams...because a ManU/Arsenal final is what everyone wants isn't it?

Champions league place...never happen.

Think its more to raise interest by the clubs - the last thing Chelea needed was a reply against us the CL coming up.

Indeed - this should never happen the FA cup is about all teams not just favouring the big cups, that why we have the saying the magic of the cup look at this weekend Man Utd v Crawley Town that will keep them going for another couple of years!

Champions league place...never happen.

I agree MikeO, the idea to move the final to 5:30 is completely unnecessary.Having it at it's usual 3pm slot has not affected people watching it in the past, so there would be no need for such a change.

I think their idea for seeding teams is to give lower league opponents more of a chance of drawing the bigger clubs. If the top clubs are seeded then they cannot face one another, increasing the odds of someone like a Crawley Town drawing Manchester United more often. Of course, it would probably mean that the majority of the time, the quarters and semis will be contested by the usual suspects, which certainly would kill some of the romance of the cup.
