A MAN was today appearing before magistrates accused of murdering a former Everton FC youth team player.

Thomas McInerney was repeatedly stabbed in Chepstow Street, Walton, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police officers on patrol found him lying in a pool of blood close to County Road’s junction with Chepstow Street.

Sean Rogan, 18, who lives just 30 yards from the scene of the knifing, was yesterday charged with killing the 21-year-old.

The teenager, of Chepstow Street, was remanded in custody yesterday ahead of his court appearance.

The ECHO understands detectives were informed about suggestions a gang may have visited a house in Chepstow Street moments before Mr McInerney was fatally stabbed.

A woman was taken to Fazakerley Hospital by paramedics from a house on the same street in the early hours of Sunday with possible assault injuries.

A few hours after the stabbing, police went to a house in Chepstow Street and arrested Rogan on suspicion of murder.

A knife was also taken from the house, which was being guarded by police officers yesterday. Its front door had been smashed in.

Today police were not looking for anyone else in connection with the murder of Mr McInerney.

The ECHO understands the 3.30am attack was not connected to gang rivalry which has troubled Walton in recent months.

Despite local rumours, detectives believe the killing was not linked to recent activity involving the so-called Deli Mob, a criminal gang which has caused trouble in Kirkdale, Everton and Walton.

More details emerged today about McInerney, who was friends with 18-year-old Jamie Kelly – known as “Bumper” – who was killed in Kirkdale in September 2009.

On a Facebook tribute page, the once-promising footballer is pictured wearing a T-shirt with the slogan “RIP James Kelly”.

Mr McInerney was once offered apprenticeship terms with Preston North End, but turned down the contract.

He was part of Everton FC’s academy system when aged between 10 and 14.

The Archbishop Beck pupil also starred for Liverpool Schoolboys’ under-15 side, which won the coveted national trophy at Anfield.

As skipper, he lifted the cup and played alongside Tom Rooney, brother of Manchester United striker Wayne.

According to locals, the midfielder also played with Everton and England under-21 star Jack Rodwell.

Tom Wyatt, former Liverpool Boys team manager, said: “Back then, I took Tom under my wing. He believed in himself on the pitch.

“He was a central midfielder, not a position you put someone in lightly.

“Some of the lads have been contacting me after hearing what happened to Tom. It is terrible.”

A County Road resident told the ECHO he looked out of his window at the time of the stabbing and saw around three people running away.

Mr McInerney was left lying in a pool of blood and, despite being rushed to hospital, he died at the Royal Liverpool Hospital at 4am.
