Burglar Who Targeted Top Soccer Stars Is Locked Up

Recommended Posts

A MAN who admitted burgling the homes of six professional footballers has been locked up for 2½ years.

James Birch, 20, pleaded guilty to breaking into Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek's house in Wirral, during which his Porsche, jewellery and priceless football memorabilia was taken.

Birch also asked a judge at Liverpool Crown Court to take into consideration seven more burglaries. The court heard that five of those victims were footballers for Liverpool or Everton.

Geoffrey Fryar, prosecuting, said Mr Dudek discovered his luxury home in Caldy had been burgled on June 19 while he had been away in his native Poland.

His patio doors had been smashed, and £30,000 worth of the goalkeeper's jewellery had been taken, along with his £75,000 Porsche Carrera.

Birch also took part in stealing Mr Dudek's priceless football memorabilia, including his Champions League shirt and medal, his World Cup finals shirt and goalkeeper's gloves.

Mr Fryar told the court the homes of five other footballers were targeted by Birch.

He said Everton midfielder Andy van der Meyde was also a victim and his dog was stolen during a break-in at his home.

The court heard the dog has since been re-united with the footballer.

Blues defender Tony Hibbert also had jewellery and electrical goods worth £70,000 stolen
