Redknapp Will Return To Pompey

Recommended Posts

The south coast is set to get even madder next week.

According to reports, Harry Redknapp is set to walk out on Southampton to return to Portsmouth - just a year after his acrimonious departure from Fratton Park - while Sir Clive Woodward is being touted as his replacement at St Mary’s after just four months in football.

Although Pompey responded to Southampton’s refusal to permit them talks with Redknapp by naming Lawrie Sanchez and Brian Kerr as their latest targets to fill the vacant managerial post following Alain Perrin's dismissal last week, the papers are convinced that Redknapp will return.

'Harry Redknapp is set to complete one of the most unlikely U-turns in English football,' reports The Daily Telegraph. 'The Southampton manager will almost certainly be at the helm when Portsmouth visit Tottenham a week on Monday'.

The Saints are expected to let their south coast rivals speak to Redknapp upon receiving assurances about compensation, while The Guardian says that: 'Redknapp is the choice of Portsmouth's fans and would welcome a move back to the Premiership and from St Mary's, where there have been tensions this season and he has been unhappy.'

Money is, as always, a principal factor; Redknapp took a 50% pay-cut after the Saints' relegation last May and would be offered 'a £1million-a-year contract by Pompey, plus a £500,000 bonus if he can keep the club in the Premiership this season' according to The Sun.

The Sun also claims that Sir Clive 'has told Southampton he wants to take over from Redknapp as manager. England's former World Cup-winning rugby coach believes he is ready after four months in football.'

It adds, however, that 'his grand plan is opposed by senior Saints players'.

Woodward is more likely to be given a more hands-on role with the first-team, but only alongside a 'more experienced football man'
